Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Slooooooooooooowwww

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I too am finding the forums somewhat less than fast. I might even go so far to say that they are indeed slow.

Heat wave? We have a high of 74 and rain in Kansas City. Normal summer here.

Agreed. 30 second page loading on cable internet is just WAAAAAY too long. I like this forum, but I'm not going to last here much longer with this access speed. Time to look for a new home page I guess.
BTW, does anyone with any "pull" ever read these complaints, or are we just peeing into the wind here?
It's a bit petty to give up on the forum because it's been slow for two days, no? It's been fine for months. Though I agree, really slow today as well.
I'm sure they read it - there's obviously something going on.

Well, I'm on a different forum where I actually am willing to pay $$$ for features and lightning fast page access speeds. Petty? Isn't he a race car driver?

Obviously you don't see my point that I'd be willing to pay for a good forum. And so would a lot of people. However it's not an option here, at least as far as I've been able to ascertain. There are ways to get around slow page loading and increased server space is one of them. Sure that costs $$$ and if you can't get it through advertising, then how about asking your customers to pay for it? We're not necessarily a bunch of freeloaders. Or maybe that is the philosophy of the site owners..."I think I'll start a cycling forum, I don't have the time or the resources to provide adequate server space or to respond to problems in a timely manner, but it's free to my customers, so f&ck em." Yeah, that works.

Suzie,
Your join date is May, 2008 but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and not assume that you're throwing around these allegations with one month's experience. The forum hasn't always been like this, and the founder is no longer a controlling factor (BF was purchased by Internet Brands a bit ago). There have been numerous posts by both forum admins and Internet Brands regarding the technical issues. Some of it is hardware, some of it is software.
Bottom line is that you're making a lot of accusations based on incorrect assumptions. If you are new, why don't you try asking questions before slinging mud?

Why are you encouraging a gal to talk while discouraging mud wrasslin? :twitchy:
I've been noticing the slowness the last couple of mornings, then it clears up before lunch. Other sites are fine and the ping times confirm that the problem is here, not my connection. Hope they get it figured out soon.
Right you are...
Internet Brands is experiencing a system-wide problem that is causing performance problems across a number of sites. The tech team is meeting now to find solutions. I will post again later today will an update. I apologize for the slowness and thank you for your patience!

^^ you're the one sitting around waiting. If it's such a waste, don't do it.
The tech team is going to be working on some reconfiguration tonight and will be monitoring IB sites system-wide. We should have more information tomorrow, and hopefully will be making progress in finding a solution. Thank you again for your patience as we work to resolve these issues.

seems to come and go
The problem persists.
We are experiencing serious system-wide problems. The tech team has been and continues to work to identify the problem and find solutions.
Any information about the time of problems (we know the mornings are when site performance is worst) and the error messages you get is very useful as the tech guys track the problems.
I apologize for the site performance issues and thank you for your ongoing patience. I will keep you updated as I hear more.
Thanks,
JuCo
I haven't gotten any error messages but the pages do hang up. Seems to be worse during editing posts but then again since it comes and goes that may have been coincidental.
Ironically, I got this error message when I first tried to open this thread:
The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
I've had several other timeouts this morning, and many pages loading very, very slow.
Testing with other websites confirms that the problem is limited to bikeforums.net...other websites are loading just fine.

Admins,
The pages are loading very slow. I posted a new thread on the road cycling forum and there are 2 duplicates. I was unable to delete the 2 duplicates. Please delete the threads named Trek Madone 4.5 crankset.
Thanks,

As a long time BF participant...this sucks.
As a long time BF advertiser...this really, really sucks.
As a professional website/database developer I can sympathize a little...but, these problems have been ongoing for months (database problems, timeouts, duplicate email messages, broken search, etc.).
The fact that the site continues to experience technical problems like this makes me question its basic architecture (php/MySQL) and/or the technical abilities of the staff, and/or the committment of the new owners to fixing the problems.

Yes, Yes a hundred times YES!! I thought it was my pc or a general 'slowing down' of the web. The site owners need to ELIMINATE COMPLETELY animated and/or moving advertisements along the side. These are what slows down the 'thread access'. It's made the 'BF experience' frustrating and tedious. The rollover takes so long, sometimes I close out in frustration. If this is a 'complaint thread' consider me signed on. Nashcommguy

All day I've been having slow to ninexistent loading and frequent bootouts, sometimes every 15 minutes.
I have AT&t at 3 Mpbs, so it's not my link to the house.

The web site has been very slow lately, especially if posting. After hitting 'Submit Reply' it might take a few minutes to post or it might not happen. Lately, I have resorted to opening a new window to check to see if the reply was posted to avoid double posting or losing the message.

Don't know if this is related or not but when using Firefox as a browser I constantly loose the connection when on BF. Happens on no other server or fourm. Any ideas? Have the same results from different computers and different services so it is not me.

No errors. Just slow slow slow.
Yes, it's been very slow.
Most of MY problems occur when I try to reply to a post. Sometimes it times out and returns a message: "Can't contact the server", yet getting back in and navigating down through the forums is a snap.

I've noticed it always happend in the morning, when I first visit the site. I can get into the forums fine, but the first time I try to load a thread, it takes a very long time, no matter which subforum I'm in. After that, and for the remainder of the day, everything seems fine.

I've been having to do the same thing. Also, I don't know whether this related to the other problems, but I've been getting duplicate email notices about new postings in threads to which I'm subscribed. Sometimes I get as many as three or four identical copies of each.

Yep...same here. Maybe that's one reason for the slow server response - it's working too hard sending out duplicate emails!

A couple times when I try and post a reply I get a "This is a duplicate" kind of message. So if the page just hangs, I open another tab with the same post, and usually my message is there. Then I close the original hanging window.
I normally open multiple (10-20) tabs so I can read/respond to various posts efficiently. Open area (like Road Cycling), right click on a message, new tab, right click on next message that interests me, etc. Then I sit and read and type.
As I have a relatively infinite amount of time to post, I just do something else for an hour or two before I go back to BF. But it's annoying because then I have to see which posts are read or not when I come back.

I agree 100%. And I also sympathize. Often times I wonder if site administrators are in tune with their users. To avoid coming across as simply just another freeloader, there are plenty of us out here who would actually pay cash money for a decent web site with fast page loading and valuable resources. It's easy for the admin to sit back and think the best solution to financng the site is to pad the pages with annoying advertisements. How often do people click on these? For me, I've been here several weeks and have yet to click on a link. I suspect I'm not far from the norm either.
This morning the page loading seems normal...a few seconds for me. Other times it makes Rip Van Winkle look like a relative of the Road Runner.
Edited to add that this posting took 54 seconds to load.
This issue is so bad it is starting to overshadow the great community spirit, It is time time to go to the other forums on the net.
(not really, just please fix)
