My BB is starting to tick alot. It has about 2000 miles on it and is a 5500. I have a 105 triple. Will the 6500 and the 7700 both work with my crank? The Dura Ace is only $8 more.

Dura Ace BB has not been know for it's longevity, perhaps you might look into Ultrega or even FSA.

Too bad (for you) Phil Wood doesn't make a Shimano-compatible BB. If they did, that's what I would get.

I was going to recommend Phil Wood, but I had no idea they didn't make a Shimano-compatible BB. That's a crime, in my opinion.

Try roadbikereview and see what others say.

AFAIK, only Shimano makes Octalink BBs.
I'd get the Dura Ace BB. If you're over 200 lbs Ultegra may last longer though.

Ultegra b/b for longevity...

Thats what I thought. I was leaning to the Ultegra for longevity. I weigh in at 192 right now but will get down to 185 this spring. So with that said how long should the Ultegra BB last? The 5500 has been a disappointment. I will say that the first 700 miles I was around 230-210lbs. I have to stand and crank a lot(stay out of the granny unless I bonk). The hills around here are pretty steep. Should the Ultegra go for closer to 5000 miles?

I would look in other places than the BB for the 'tick'. 105 BB's have a pretty good reputation, and should go many times the number of miles that you've traveled.

The first thing I'd do is lube and tighten all the bolts in the chainwheels, pedals, stem, handlebars, seat clamp and seat post binder. If the tick still persists, I would remove the cranks and BB, clean and grease the BB threads and crank bolts, then re-install the BB and crank and torque to proper spec's.

It has been my experience that BB's don't go away after 2,000 miles. And it's also been my experience that a noise or 'tick' on the bike doesn't necessarily come from where you think it does, they are very difficult to pin-point. So before you go spending any money, spend some time and to chase your 'tick' down.

If it does come down to buying a new BB, The Ultegra is less money, far less maintenance and much easier to install.

I'm not sure the Duraace TRIPLE BB is a light-weight one like the double.

I must say that I'm not impressed with the dura ace double BB over the old ultegra (non-octilink) BB... I was expecting more...

The Ultegra/DA triple BBs are sealed up unlike the dobule DA BB. THe cups on these tend to wear out beofre the bearings but on the DA BB the axle/bearings wear out sooner...

many bikes with dura ace gets built up with ultegra...at least the 03s and older. thats because the dura ace is not a sealed unit, and for most of us, we don't want to have to overhaul it 3 to 5 times a year.

I took apart a ultegra bb look for a tick once...it turned out to be the pedal. another time it was the cups, I used teflon tape on the treads and that took care of it.
