Well, I finally decided to take the plunge into the lycra wearing crowd. I have one pair of baggies that I've been wearing and they do a good job and have their place, but I did get a little chafing on my Tour de Cure ride this weekend, so I thought now;s the time.
I ordered 2 pairs of Pearl Izumi Slice Shorts from Performance, hopefully the overnight delivery will bring them tomorrow. Yahoo!

Lycra shorts make a big difference, you'll wish you had done this sooner!
I'm 5'11" and 245 lbs so I guess I could squeeze into a pair of these. I may go to Performance tonight and get a pair. Anyone have any pointers on what to look for in a pair of lycra shorts.
I'm going to guess you will fit the 2xl or XL sized Bibs at performance. Better a little tight than a little loose with lycra, there's a LOT of stretch in them.
I strongly suggest bibs rather than elastic waist shorts. ;)

I agree with you about bibs, but sizing of Performance shorts is all over the map. The 2x gel shorts are too big for me, while 2x in their other shorts are OK.
Which is why I put in the better a little tight codicil....and he can go to performance rather than mail order. That's a distinct advantage....tryons rather than a guess. ;)

I don't think I would buy shorts or bibs mailorder. I'm down to 167 now, but I still wear XL Pearl Izumi shorts.
+1 on bibs not shorts.
As far as mail order, although it is a little bit of a pain, Nashbar and Performance both have excellent return policies. And since neither has a store in my area, I go mail order.
I have to drive 2 hours to get to a Performance Store, so its easier to mail order
Just picked up my first pair of Lycra shorts at Performance. Got them on sale for $34.99. Tried them on and got some very positive feedback from the wife.:thumb:
Well I took my first ride tonight with my new Pearl Izumi Slice Ultrasensor Shorts, and boy do I LOVE them. After a 1,000 miles in my Fox Baggie MTB shorts, I'm glad that I finally made the decision to go with the lycra.
The padding in the Slice shorts is thicker than my MTB shorts, but not too thick. Looks like there is a BG cut in the padding, and I found the ride to be more comfortable in these shorts. Also, the baggies used to rub the saddle which I never realized until tonight. I could feel a difference in my pedaling with nothing rubbing the saddle.
Also, I found the Lycra to be cooler because the baggies have two layers--the tights and the baggies.
Overall, the PI's are extremely comfortable and I'm glad I made the switch.
