Next august I'm riding from Pittsburgh to Washington DC via the Allegheny Passage trail and C&O canal trail. orginally I was terminating the trip in Washington DC . My wife just suggested meeting her in Va Beach. any route suggestions? what might be the possibilty of using the ferries that cross the Chesapeake?
thanks
Rick

Thanks JR,
I also talked to some other folks in your area and I think what I will do is ride the MT Vernon trail to the end and then go through Ft Belvoir to Pohick bay regional park, I will camp there ,then the next morning I will ride straight down US1 when most of the traffic is going the opposite way. I need to make Colonial Beach in one day (~72 miles) If I take the *official route that winds through Independent hill and around garrisonville that will tack on another 15-18 miles. I think I would rather climb the 6 rolling hills between Woodbridge and Stafford. What do you think?

it might be the longest 72 miles of your trip because of the traffic but there is no easy way around it and straight down rt 1 is your best bet.i live in woodbridge and work in arlington next to the mt vernon trail and would like to give you any help you would need.email me anytime joerafter@comcast.net
I cycled from D.C. to Pittsburgh, PA, and back, in June 2003.
I know how to cycle to IAD, Dulles International Airport. I came to America via it and flew back also from IAD. I cycled from and up to this airport. I assembled and disassembled the bikes inside the airport building.
But it seems you mean another airport. Still if you have questions regarding these trails, feel free to ask me.

Metro, the subway goes right to National and you can take your bike onto the subway when it is not rush hour. My sisters both live in the DC area and know their way around, me the more city riding I can avoid the better.
