Mountain Biking - Somebody had to ask... What'd you get for Christmas?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I got a nice set of Azonic Carbon bars that are really light and seem more comfortable for my arms and hands. I also got a replacement disc which I thought would cure my woes, but my disc still drags at certain spots so I'm not sure of the problem. I also got some SIDI shoes which I was in desperate need of, and some riding socks to go along with them. Oh.. and a new bottom bracket to replace mine that creaks and crunches since I've literally owned it since I was 15, just put it in different bikes. I got some various other stuff but it's not bike related so I'll keep it out of this thread. How about you guys?

Whoopee! I got some Chris King hubs (front and rear) so all I need is some rims, Sapim spokes, discs, rear cassette, and I can build a cool set of wheels. For some reason, I think the cost involved in this project has only just begun...

killerasp - what's wrong with a 12 year old with a shiny new bike? When I have a 12 year old, I hope I'll still have the means to give him or her a shiny new bike if the time/size is right. I don't think that would spoil them....

bokkie - correct.

hmm, I would like a lot of this bike stuff, but I don't dare ask my parents for it...they would buy the wrong thing...and I'd feel bad returning it. I'd rather spend my own money buying bike stuff. I got no bike-related stuff except for some crazy bike-socks...

Let me start by saying my wife doesn't like getting me bike related stuff because she never knows what I need or already have and she knows I spend a lot of time reading/researching deals. I ended up buying a lot of my bike related "gifts".

She got me: A subscription to Dirt Rag and Mountain Bike Action, and a Craftsman Saw (not bike related).

I bought for myself: a new CamelBack, some new 2.4 WTB tires, a new Salsa Seat, and some new platform pedals (Truvative Holzfella's (sp?)).

I bought for her: some new Diadora Road Shoes and Speedplay Zero (Stainless) pedals.

I bought for my son (almost 4) a new Specialized HotRock (16" wheeled) BMX bike w/training wheels.

I gave my wife a Zoic long sleeve jersey, some half-fingered croquet-style Pearl Izumi gloves, a new helmet with special ponytail spacing in the back, cool looking triathalete socks, and the book Miles from Nowhere, which she's been reading and telling me about. She gave me a Patagonia rain jacket that's really nice.

Despite my single minded obsession with cycling, I often get the WORST gifts for Christmas. People in my family are so friggin' thoughtless when it comes to gifts, it made me mad. I went on strike and told them not to bother this year.

Despite my strike, I still got everyone great presents. As usual, I got a couple of necklaces I will rarely wear (yup, even though I said don't bother), but my mother got me this rainproof and wind resistant fleece/spandex type material hood- it can drop down over the neck and become a scarf, or you can pull it up and turn it into a baclava, or you can totally hide your face up to your eyes and turn it into the ultimate baclava- it was actually so good it was scary, and she didn't even put thought into it. She saw it on QVC and thought it would be nice for my brother and I to have one. Thankfully, I now have a great hood that I can use to shield me from the wind and rain, finally. So I guess my hysterics finally did pay off... I finally got the gift that will keep on giving...

No bike. :( Too much to ever wish for from my family.

For myself, I got a CycleOps Fluid 2 trainer, a photoprinter for my digital camera, a new goretex jacket that's light and windproof and water resistant, a long sleeved coolmax shirt, dumbbells from in 2 1/2 pound increments from 7 pounds to 50 pounds, barbells, and wireless internet. So I'm feeling pretty good right now. Damn, I give good gifts! :D

I didn't get anything involving a bicycle for Christmas. I did get myself something that I do plan to use later on if I try to run some mapped trails.

It's a Suunto Vector watch. I'm sure that I did pay too much ($216) but I am happy with it, and that is what matters to me most.

I got a Shimano XT Cassette, along with an SRAM PC-59 9-speed chain. Treated myself to a RaceFace Prodigy XC and Shimano XT shifters/brake levers with some Christmas money. On the non-components side, I got a Topeak JoeBlow pump, the other broke a while back. Plus a bike repair stand, it really helps with putting all thes components on!! :D

Got a late present after my ride last sunday, Got back covered in mud and not looking forward to the 2 hours it would take me to clean the bike. We have have rain over here in Sussex, and the clay sticks a bit at present. Big Box came out and it took me about 15 minutes to set it up. 10 minutes later, one gleaming shining clean bike. Yea, got a powerwash.

One tip to pass on. Got the wife to hose me down with it, and it cleared the Goretex and shorts of the crap on them in about 10 seconds. Then she decided to wash the legs. I now now have turned into a roadie with a sqeeky voice and no body hair. If it hurts that much on bare skin, I'll wash the bike in future from about 2 ft away in future.

Keep the pressure washer away from any bearings as the force of the water will pass any type of bearing seal and could force the grease out. In addition, if there is dirt/mud around the bearing, it could force this into the bearing itself.

I don't even spray with a garden hose anywhere near my bearing.

I let the water run out of the hose and spray down my tires and my frame. I then fill a bucket with soapy water and a BIG brush and wipe down the bike. I have a sponge that I use to get into tight areas, and a seperate smaller brush I use on the drivetrain. I can clean my bike in about 15 to 20 mins.

As far as the PW on the skin, well,.....you learned the hard way is all I can say!

Good Luck!
