Hey, all. I'm going to be relocating to Las Cruces this summer in order to start work on my Master's at NMSU in the Fall - I am curious about the cycling vibe/community in this neck of the woods. What's the bike lane situation - if there are any out there - and if you cycle around town, are the motor vehicle drivers hostile?
I'm in the market for a single-speed to ride to campus, but am looking forward to riding up the mountains located near Las Cruces with my current 18 speed ride.
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Peace.
The bike paths and bike lanes are good going north from the university. University drive climbs past A-mountain up to the base of the Organ Mountains. The drivers are OK for the most part. NMSU has a bicycle club but many train with ziavelo who meet across from the University at Mialgro coffee shop. Bike and chowder is mostly retired folks if you are looking for a mellower ride.

Thanks for the info!
I'm itching to get up the mountains, despite not having the legs for them...yet. I am working on it and I know I'll suffer for a while until I get my climbing skills back (I used to live in the Texas Hill Country and I rode like crazy out there). Oh, yeah, and I can't wait to get started at NMSU also...

I did regional mountain qualifying two years ago for Nationals in Colorado, reppin THE asu sun devils. Best mountain trails, very technical, but thats southwest ridin of course. A couple living there was nice enough to house me and two other teammates. Very laid back, reminded me of my midwest hometown, that small town feel. Im more of a city guy myself, so I could never live there. NMSU has a cycling club team, couple guys milk the system, really are elite roadies... and the young couple that housed us, both pro roadies, maybe the tucson of new mexico?
Good Luck!

Thanks for the info, steelonly!
I took a trip out to Las Cruces last weekend and loved it! I'm also a city fella at heart, but I love the small-town feel Las Cruces has.
A friend mentioned a ride on the weekends that starts at Cafe Milagro and goes out and back for something like 70 or so miles.
I saw a lot of bike lanes and bike friendly signs - share the road - which was a breathe of fresh air, coming from car-dense Houston. Looks like there are some nice climbs out there and I saw plenty of folks out riding bikes. Two years might not be enough time to enjoy Las Cruces after all...
