General Cycling Discussion - A couple of questions i would like answered =D

I have a few questions...

1. I got bike shoes for christmas and the are Shimano ATB i think, But the instructiongs say they arent for road bikes. The pedals on the bike are wellgo clipless. But lots of guys wear mountain bike shoes for walking. SO whats the deal, will they work? (i get my bike saturday when the shop opens again)

2. How hard is it to install a cyclocomputer? its an Cateye Astrale 8.


I guess thats it...i had a great christmas and i have all this stuff and i gotta wait 2 days for my bike =/ and a helmet!

I'm all thumbs, a total klutz; and I can install a bike computer. If I can do it, you can. My LBS said the Wellgo pedals were ok, but my previous experience with Wellgo pedals would incline me to ask to upgrade them before I took delivery. Shimano makes a nice pedal. If those Wellgo pedals are the same SPD pedals I see around, they will work just fine with Shimano shoes.

I bought some Shimano MTB shoes and SPD pedals (on clearance from my LBS) several years ago, specifically for my road bike, and have had no problems to date.

The difficulty installing cyclocomputers probably varies from model to model. The last one I purchased (a Ciclomaster) came with a cadence function. It has two wire leads, one for the front wheel, one for the crankset. IIRC, it wasn't difficult to install. I'm not familiar with the Astrale, but if you've installed one cyclocomputer...

BTW, since you hale from Austin, have you had any Lance sightings?

Once we were in the same bathroom together and had a pleasant 5min converstation about bikes and riding in general. I was totally stunned on how down to earth and nice he is! and he doesnt dress or act like a super star. He was wearing blue jeans and a old dirty t-shirt lol

Some sports stars make it so big on account of their ego and bank balance and can sometimes not be bothered to give time to the very folk who look to them with respect and admiration.

HAMMER- sorry. I think though the post made me warm a little to Lance- I worked w\ the world dj kings and most were @sses. The few that can resist the ego max and still be real people I respect.

If the cleat sticks out enough it will work.I dont know about anybody else but i dont have a problem walking in my road shoes but i dont go hiking in them.I walk to the garage and get on my bike.Sometimes i even walk down the driveway to get the paper and have never fallen down.

If you use a double sided SPD MTB pedal, the shoes will work fine. I ride a road bike with Wellgo SPD MTB pedals and Speciaized MTB shoes per doctor's orders. You may even be able to use the few one sided SPD road pedals with those shoes.

As for the computer, installation inscructions should have been included, and Cateye has manuels for download on their site. The Zinn book has a section on bike computers. Basiclly you need to align the sensor with the wheel magnet within 3mm or so. Make sure excess wiring is wound around the brake cable or tied up in some fashion that it does not interfere with braking, but wnough slack that the bike steers normally without yanking the wiring out.

The shoes will work with MTB pedals. MTB pedals will work on a road bike. Compatibility depends on the type of cleat your pedal uses. If it uses a three-hole Look style cleat, you won't be able to attach the cleat to a MTB shoe. If it uses a two hole SPD mountain bike style cleat, there should be no problem.

As for those who disparage the quality of Wellgo pedals, they aren't the greatest pedals, but they work. Wellgo actually manufactures pedals for a lot of other brand names. Use them until you wear them out, then replace them with something better.

I concur on both counts. I put Wellgos on my mountain bike last year, because at the time I did not have the special wrench I needed to rebuild my Shimanos. The Wellgos are indeed adequate, but the Shimanos are significantly better made and smoother.

I have never understood the bad rep Wellgo gets I am on my 3rds season with one set and second with a third set they have been very good to me.

Yeah, im big Lance fan so no hard feelings Jeff Williams, infact the post made me laugh lol...The wellgo pedals are on my 02 Bianchi Brava, so like yall said ill use them and replace them as they wear....Thanks everyone
