Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If you loved doing the Ride Around the Bear, you might be interested doing the Everest Challenge road race. It's the Calif/Nevada climbing championship. 29,035 feet of climbing over 200 miles split between two days. The organization putting on this race does a good job, they are totally cool people. The race is basicly three climbs on the first day and three climbs on the second day. You can sign up as a racer or as a recreational rider. If you only complete half the climbs on the first day, you can still do the second day. This is some of the best climbing in the US. We did it last year on a tandem and were totally blown away. I have never had this much fun at any event. Check out there web sight at http://www.everestchallenge.com/

You were the tandem crew? Wow. my helmet's off to you and your partner. It's a sick enough ride on a solo. I can't imagine doing it on a tandem. How many times did you and your stoker re-evaluate your relationship during the ride?

We were the tandem crew on Everest challenge. My stoker was a close friend. Married to one of my best friends. We had very little time together to train on a tandem. Her and Her husband are former National Tandem champions. I could of not of asked for a better stoker. She never complained, never quit, and always had a positive attitude on the bike. Her tandem experiance made me a better captian. One thing we could do was stand at will and hammer the steep grades. Not to many people can do this on a tandem. This year I am doing Everest on my single. It won't be as hard, but I won't get as many atta boys.

I am thinking about it, but looking for a good excuse to bail out... Everybody I know who has done it (as a race) doesn't like to talk about it -- sort of like a stay in prison ;-)

I'll be there again this year. I've been climbing stronger and I'm going to train for it as a race this time instead of just to survive....

Contemplating it. I'll have to decide by early July, and start training if it's a "go". I want to do the race, but the training is big commitment that I'm not sure I'm up to this year.

Really? Steve's already posted, and I talk about it, probably too much. Certainly more than I talk about my time in prison.:p

I collected all the race reports from last year that I could find http://ericm.lne.com/blog/?p=93
My race report: http://ericm.lne.com/blog/?p=89

Last year there was a fair amount of talk about it here. It's how I found BF in the first place.

I'll be doing a lot of Mt Hamilton repeats again this year, if you're looking for someone to train with.

Thanks... I have been doing lots of climbing lately, so I would be on pace... I am doing a high-altitude race in 2 weeks; we'll see how I feel after that...

I'm thinking about it. I hear it's pretty flat.

I rode it the past couple of years. It's the same weekend as the 24 hour race in Idyllwild though, and I've had a Solo 24-hour singlespeed race as a goal for a few years now, and still haven't worked up the nerve to attempt it/train for it.

Think I may do the 24 Hour race this year instead of Everest Challenge.

Either way, I'm guaranteed to be suffering that weekend.
