My wife and I are going to try our first adventure race this summer, and we're dusting off our old Ibis Cousin It for the ride. Now, I don't plan on making any big changes for this race, after all, no matter what I do it's still a hardtail bike with no disc brake capability and minimal ground clearance. However, if we like this adventure race thing, then I want to start looking around for another tandem a bit more suited to serious off roading. So, I'm looking for a bit of a primer on off road tandeming, what's out there for decent brands, what shocks/brakes/wheels stand up to off road tandeming, that sort of thing. Our team weight is 300 pounds and we are moderately aggressive riders.

I'd love to hear what's out there and your off road tandem experiences!!

Thanks
Steve

MBR.com has an off road tandem forum on it with some information.

Double Forte is a Yahoo! group of off-road tandemists, with a pretty good archive of knowledge: http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/DOUBLE_FORTE/

MTBR.com (I think that's what Aemmer intended to type) has a relatively recent mountain tandem forum: http://forums.mtbr.com/forumdisplay.php?f=143

Check out the rules for the adventure race you are doing. Many of them have "no tandem rules".

My son and I have a blast on our KHS Tandemania. Yes, its "only" a hardtail, but it allows me to cycle with my son up mountains he could never do on his own.
