I have a Casati SL frame that has some rust on the top tube where the brake cable runs thru the cable guides and I have rust in the bottom bracket tube. Where could I send it to be repainted? I want a reputable place that won't repaint if the rust is too bad. Also, what does it generally cost to have a frame painted? Just a basic one color paint job.

Thanks,
BobD

Check out Waterford Cycles. They have a frame refinishing service that is first class. Many bike shops that have a steel frame to be refinished send them to Waterford: http://www.waterfordbikes.com/

Cost varies widely, but you can anticipate at least $150
and costs of 2-.25x that are not unusual, depending on methods, masking, prep, type of paint and graphics.
Bike frames should be subjected to nothing harsher than glass beading, preferably less harsh materials if 'blasted'.
A google for "bicycle refinishing" yielded multiple web sites for perusal. Steve

I had an older steel frame painted a couple years ago. I checked out several options before deciding to get it powder coated. The price tag for a single color (red) was $100 (included $25 for sandblasting/prep). I didn't replace any decals or stickers.

The other options?
1) An auto body shop. One refused to do it outright (they said I wouldn't pay what they'd charge). Another said they'd be willling to give it a try, but their lack of experience with bicycle painting made me reconsider.
2) A bicycle painting vendor. There were several on the web. They were fairly spendy, especially when shipping was factored in.
3) DIY. There's several sources for paint. There's cans of Rustoleum or other brands of spray paint. Also, auto supply stores can custom mix a color and load it into aerosol spray cans for you. You can paint it with a brush as well. Since I wanted the bike to look nice, I backed off of this option (I have trouble painting walls).

I have been told of an acid bath used to clean steel- is this bad for a frame? I do know a bike that had this done before painting.
