I moved to LA from Chicago about a month ago, where I was a regular commuter. The moving truck finally arrived, so my bike and I are one again.

It's a short commute, 3.5 miles from Silver Lake to Downtown, but these hills are going to be the death of me. Chicago is as flat as a pancake, the tallest incline on my commute being a railroad overpass. But, I took Hoover -> Temple -> Glendale -> my stupidest decision ever. Instead of hanging left on 2nd when I was already at the same elevation as downtown, I decided to climb up Lucas. My flatlander quads and lungs gave out halfway up.

Since Temple isn't that good of a route, I'll probably go out of my way to run Sunset so I can use the path. I'm hoping that the slight burning at the back of my throat is either psychosomatic an infection, because if it's from the air quality on a decent AQ day, I'm going to be in trouble this summer.

Welcome neighbor! I regularly commute from Echo Park to Hollywood. It's an easy, straight shot Sunset Blvd for me, just 6 miles each way. :D

Another Silverlaker here... welcome to the neighborhood!

Sunset might be a better choice, it's crowded but it has a decent bike lane (which sometimes seems to double as a bus lane.) Either take Sunset straight out to Chinatown and hang a right on any of those streets, or you could take it to Benton, cross over the freeway and then take Temple all the way out.

I was bicycling with my Mobiky Genius around Silver Lake yesterday. I thought it was kind of a bad smog day myself, and I've been here 20 years. It does get worse, unfortunately, as will your symptoms I suspect.

The air felt heavier yesterday due to the rise in humidity. I would rather ride in 120 degree temp w/ 1% humidity.
