Took a trip to Oregon last weekend, including a jaunt to Crater Lake. This was the view:

I had a folding bike with me, but the roads were still closed due to snow. I want to come back some day and ride around the rim road - 33 miles, 3800 ft, at 7000+ elevation. This would be a memorable ride!

I did a tour of south Oregon one year, I think it was called the Cascades Tour. It was a tougher than usual tour, but the scenery was breathtaking. You wouldn't be disappointed by taking a tour like this. I don't think the outfit is in business anymore, "Scenic Cycling Adventures". I knew the guy who was running the business, Richard Martin, but haven't kept in touch with him. He's probably out traveling South America or something like that.

There's the Crater Lake Century on August 16. I am tempted. I camped there once, the campsite is nice, not on the rim though.

Crater Lake is beautiful. The road is very narrow with no shoulders, but there is much less traffic in that park than in parks like Yosemite. Be prepared for cool day time temperatures during the summer.

I'm doing that ride with a bunch of friends, I'm really looking forward to it.

Is registration still open?

I hope so - I have family in the area and have been intending to sign up!

I just took a look, and it let me through to the registration page - looks like they still have room. It will be nice to do a ride limited to just 225 instead of thousands.

My family lives up in Seattle so I routinely drive back and forth. I outta take the bike and swing by Crater Lake sometime. I've never taken the time to even visit. Maybe having the bike will give me a good excuse :)

There's only a small window of opportunity to do this ride. It's July or August. I'm thinking of going back this year - can't wait :)..... Here are two more pics:

Wow.. big giant sheet of glass.. Looks like a postcard. What are the restrictions on that lake? I looks almost totally undistrubed.
