Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Ads

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I realize that BikeForums.net requires ads to bring in money to support the forums. I have no problem with ads that stay put. What I do have a problem with are those ads that pop up in the web page and cover what you are doing. I was just in the Commuting subforum and one of those ads (for BestBuy) came up. I'm not that internet intelligent, so I apologize if this is not a BF server doing this. If this is on the BF server, I would greatly appreciate it of those ads were removed. Permanently.
For clarification, I am refering to the ads that come up in the current page, like a drop down menu. They cover up what you are doing and are a pain to close. If it comes up again, I will try to get a screen shot of it.
I do not believe we have any pop-up ads on this forum. I will inquire with the higher ups to be sure. However I suggest looking into running this, Adaware free download here: http://lavasoft.com/single/trialpay.php Should hopefully identify and help get rid of any software which has made its way on your computer which is throwing up pop ups.

All we use are text ads and the small banners like downtube Folding bikes on the sidebar.
Definitely no popups. It does sound like a little malware has infected the computer.....

only if it can hide itself very, very well along with get past mutiple firewalls AND survive my scans ( which is very unlikely)
But thanks for the info.

I've never seen popup ads on BF (I often browse without logging in). I'd suspect *ware, too.

UNfortunately, I'm on paranoid and occasionally some stuff gets by my security as well. Malware security by it's nature is reactive in nature. Once someone figures out a new approach, the security companies have a small lag in developing new heuristic models for the new spyware.
Then there's my wife, who often bypasses the security on the desktop computer. :( Another issue, multiple firewalls can work against each other and leave holes in your system through that incompatibility of approaches that can arise. Do a check at www.trendmicro.com and see if there's anything in there with their online scanner.
All it takes is a small mistake or a new type of malware to get past whatever system you use.
