I agree with JasBike.
If anything, beefier parts makes for a more carefree commuter, If you're looking for some justification.

Nope, not at all. Get what you want, ride it how you like. Don't worry about what others think - if they think you're a poseur, that's their problem, not yours! Enjoy it!!

I got a Surly Instigator frame for x-mas, I plan on using it for commutting and urban, etc
is it poserish if I buy somewhat beefy parts and not use them to their full advantage while I get my confidence up? Is it poserish to have a bike that may be too good for you?
Not at all. If people think that then they're probably jealous of your ride. The Instigator does have a high "cool factor".
Besides, the "rule of thumb" is to buy the best bike you can afford. You don't want to compromise on parts.
P.S. Make sure you get a damn good lock for it like a Kryptonite 2000 if you're commuting on it.

i just built that same bike....my thought was why buy cheap parts for it to learn on, you will only end up breaking them and get the expensive ones eventually. So just build it up nice and tough now so you can save money in the long run.
