I am making plans to head back to my favorite place to ride, WNC in about 2 weeks time. I will be up there from Friday - Sunday.

On Friday, 6/20 and will do something short that evening, depending on what time I arrive - around 20 miles, probably not more than that.

My plan for Saturday, 6/21 is to ride the Ring of Scott (http://www.motionmakersbikes.com/html/ring_of_scott.html) and have the Ring of Fire (http://www.motionmakersbikes.com/html/ring_of_fire.html)as my bailout route. Bailout option will be determined probably during the ride, depending on how I'm feeling after Cullowhee Mtn. Road.

Sunday, 6/22 will be the Burningtown Loop in Franklin. Don't have a linky for that route, but I have the route in Training Center.

If anyone wishes to join me, just reply to the thread. I don't have a place to stay yet, but will be looking for something on the cheaper (but still decent) side...prolly stay either in the Franklin area or Sylva.

anyone know anything about the Days Inn in Franklin (http://www.daysinn.com/DaysInn/control/Booking/check_avail?brandCode=DI,MQ,HJ,KG,RA,SE,TL,BU&searchWithinMiles=25&areaType=1&destination=franklin&state=NC&country=US&checkInDate=06/27&numberAdults=1&numberRooms=1&checkOutDate=06/29&numberChildren=0&numberBigChildren=0&rate=000&variant=&id=01849&propBrandId=DI&force_nostay=false)?

Oh my, this is tempting. I was sort of planning to ride the Blood, Sweat and Gears half century route that weekend. I'll have to re-think my plans. Of course even if I do ride the BS&G route, I could still make the Burningtown Loop on Sunday.

I stayed at the Blue Ridge Inn in Sylva last September. You might want to consider it. It's Ok and, not expensive. The location is great because you're right in town and, can walk to the stores and restaurants (what few they have).

guys - i might change the dates to next weekend, as there is a forum member in georgia that may be able to come up and ride if it is the weekend of the 21st. i'll know today whether he can come up and ride.

i may change the dates to Friday, 6/20 - Sunday, 6/22 anyways due to BSG, so Neal and anyone else thinking about that ride could also do this ride as well...

i'll know more sometime today.....

I'm most likely out for the weekend of the 28th. I'm supposed to be in Missouri for a metric. I'm still not sure what I am doing on the 21st. You guys don't need me anyway. ;)

haha. no, i'm a big girl now and can navigate either routes with or without you. you are welcome to come out and ride with us, if you would like to though. :)

MV is a very strong YES for riding ring of scott on saturday 6/21.

it could just be you and i riding, but we'll wait 'n see who else chimes in. if it's just us two, we can decide what to do about RoS or RoF later in the ride...

Wasn't this thread originally posted with different dates?

Anyway, on Saturday, June 21 (or is it now June 22?) I'll be headed to a slow death a little further south in the mountain chain. I hope the weather is dry and not too hot for everyone.

wolfpack
06-13-08, 11:29 AM
yes it was originally posted with dates a week later, but MV is only available on Saturday June 21, so that's when i'm going to be there riding.

i just posted this in case anyone might want to join me...it's not really an 'official SEBF' ride or whatever you want to call it. i need to get away for a bit to somewhere that makes me happy and WNC climbing makes me happy. :)

*edit*
fixed dates in OP.

wolfpack
06-13-08, 12:54 PM
dunno jon. i've looked in sylva/dillsboro and i think Holiday Inn Express had rooms. there's also a Days Inn in Franklin and something else. i'll be figurin' out where to stay this weekend....

Great!

So, we have the following people so far, who will be coming up next weekend to ride:

Friday: wolfpack & Pugsly (assuming we get to Sylva by 6pm)

Saturday: ModoVincere, NealH, wolfpack, Pugsly, & maybe BikeWNC

Sunday: wolfpack, Pugsly, NealH, & maybe BikeWNC

Doesn't anyone want to ride mtb in the cool woods? :(

I'll most likely make the Sunday ride but Sat. is still up in the air for me at this time. I guess it depends on the weather forecast.

wolfpack
06-13-08, 05:11 PM
you haven't mentioned anything about riding in the woods on mtb until now. maybe that's possible too....

i suppose if we only did RoF on Saturday, an easy-ish mtb ride later that afternoon or evening might be an option, but you have to let me know (i haven't had mind-reading 101 yet either). i do have a mtb ya know and she hasn't been ridden in quite a long time. :o

uh, i don't have a mtb so i thought this was going to be a road biking trip. i already made reservations but can cancel them by wednesday with no penalty so just decide in the next few days is all I ask.

Nah, don't listen to me. I'm still burned out from Mitchell. Haven't been on my bike since then, it's just been too hot. Today was better but I just didn't feel like going. Maybe I'll get out tomorrow, maybe not. The river is calling my name and it is nice and cold. :)

it's just a road ride jon. i'll prolly go back up in august for mtb riding, as my plate is sorta getting full for july with some stuff i've got planned.

any thoughts about carpooling? i could prolly leave at the earliest 12pm on friday. any later than 1-1:30 and we won't have enough time to get much riding in on friday evening.

Pugsly
06-13-08, 11:03 PM
Thanks Karen - I'm fine if you want to do mtb & road, but it's just not my thing. Much happier to be able to join in!

I'm happy to drive us up if you want to carpool - easy to throw both bikes on my Thule rack, and I should be able to leave any time you are ready. If we leave at noon we should be there in time to ride for a couple of hours. I suppose we could stop somewhere before Sylva to ride for a while too - any thoughts?

Only problem may be that I think we are at different hotels?

wolfpack
06-13-08, 11:16 PM
nah. i'll save the mtb for later. it's not a problem.

not sure about where to stop before getting to Sylva - maybe BikeWNC could chime in and offer a suggestion since he's from that area. i do have a route in TC that we did in september that left from Sylva, prolly around 18-20 miles and went up (or over or whatever) to WCU and back.

A date change - this is good news. I should be able to make this trip so, put me down on the list. Friday's ride will be a maybe (actually doubtful) but, I'll be there Sat and Sun. Lets hope for some compassionate weather that weekend. Good pick on the routes.

i have a route in mind for friday jon, as long as we get to sylva by 6pm...i'm thinking of leaving from this store in Sylva and riding up to WCU and back, like i did in september. or, maybe BWNC can suggest something else.........

I am so jealous of you folks. On 6/21 I am flying to Chicago and then seeing folks there and in Milwaukee for the next week. I will have a bike up there, though. I'd much rather be riding in WNC doing some climbing.

I did get to go up to North Georgia about a month ago and rode the 6 Gaps. Hogpen was kick-ass, but the others were not that much. Still, all of them were way better than anything around where I live.

jon, i found this (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=5325582&postcount=120) from my ride back in September. i can't remember exactly how we went on the route and my garmin decided it didn't want to stay on, so i don't have any route info except for maybe a mile....but i do have a starting location.

Okay, just heard from Karen and things are up in the air. She has someone she really wants to ride with who won't be able to do this route, so if they are coming the route will be different. Also, mtb may be added back in.

sorry guys - wasn't my intention to organize a ride or take on that responsibility at this time, so i probably should've just not posted anything. an organized ride may occur in the fall though.

i'm out for the road riding on saturday. i want to have fun riding and lately, it's not happening on my road bike...i had a blast last night at umstead on the mtb and i'm going to go to Tsali and ride there for a while or any other mtb-type trails - maybe even do a short road ride later that day, if i'm not too tired.

i probably will join you for the friday ride.

Going to go ride 1/2 the Six Gap course on Saturday. NC is a bit too long a haul for one days ride. Rest of you guys have a great ride though.

Looks like the rest of us are out as well. Really enjoyed the last WNC ride we did and thought this would be similar but it just didn't work out that way. Hope to do another ride out in WNC again in the near future.

How is this possible?

wolfpack
06-18-08, 07:52 AM
dunno. it's just not right now.

maybe because i got out the day after Marion, rode and just had a hard time due to the heat/humidity & wind that day, and then the next day i got caught in a monsoon. i haven't ridden her since then....i've had a blast on the mtb tho, so i'm gonna ride that some more this weekend and hopefully next week get back on the road bike. i'd like to ride a century next weekend, so i better start feeling some love for that bike.

rest, relax, chill out

Sweep a beginner's or slow-riders ride.

go for an unplanned ride on the road (leaving that Garmin thing turned off).

enjoy the scenery

Yea, this is one of the reasons I wanted to just go to WNC and ride my mtb and maybe the road bike too - rest, relax, chill out...I think I was on the very edge of getting overtrained, if not overtrained and it wasn't much fun riding...I want to find that fun again.

I've cut back on my weekday evening rides and, I already feel better. I now realize one or even two days between relatively intensive riding is just not enough recovery time (at my age anyway). These last couple weeks the only weekday riding has been the Spin Cycle Thursday ride. Then my legs and energy level are in much better shape come Saturday morning.
