View Full Version : madison to kenosha: route?
i'm planning on biking down to kenosha to ride the 'drome. any route or camping reccomendations? i'd like to make it in one day if possible, camp overnight, and then ride the velodrome and head back - probably having to stop for another night somewhere.

I can't think of any camping close to the velodrome. There's a campground in Bristol, but that's pretty far away (and the wrong direction). Cliffside Park on the northside of Racine is pretty nice ... right on the lake and they have camping (prob. 20 miles from the velodrome, but a pretty nice ride). Otherwise you could do W.R. Wadewitz Nature Camp in Rochester (western Racine County and maybe 30 miles from the 'drome).
Racine County has some nice parks. http://www.racineco.com/publicworks/parks.aspx Well, Kenosha does too, but just no camping that I can think of. :)
Routes? Do you like hills or not? :D

You're riding a track bike there?

I saw half a dozen 'fixies' doing the Trek 100 this past weekend ... well, I saw them at mile 3, dunno how many did 100. http://emoticons4u.com/happy/993.gif
It's no problem riding a road bike on the track. Just be careful when riding slow up on the bank ... don't clip a pedal, but unless you've got 175 cranks, you're probably fine. Sounds like a great trip. Check out the harbor/downtown area while you're there ... pretty cool (I think).

For some reason I thought road bikes were not allowed on the track.

Oh sure ... they even have a 'run what you've brung' citizens night (thursdays?) and there's plenty 'o people that just show up to ride ( roadies doing intervals or sprint work, neighborhood kids riding around, etc)

Recursive: I think you'd do well on the track. Seemingly fast twitched like a sprinter with the stamina of a roadie, not afraid to rub elbows when necessary. Maybe not match sprint, but something longer like the miss and out, or points race. Yup, you should give it a go some time. :giver:
thanks for the help john. and there are stock bike races on monday for like $2, including road bikes and little kids even (never been there yet though).
yes, i was gonna ride a track bike there - i don't think it will be too big of a problem - i am in the best shape i've ever been in probably. i should have a fear gear options i can carry, plus my frame has room for large tires, water bottle, and rack braze-ons. plus it's drilled for brakes, but i don't have one that fits right now.
hills would be ok, i think i could probably make it w/out walking at all if my gearing is right.

I shot some pix there last summer: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=327570

No fixed gears on Mondays, but you can ride the track anytime, it's a city park!

Camp at Bong in Kenosha County.
It could effectively be on the way (hell, they're on the same road Washington/Hwy142) in or out.
Distance?... Should be ~20 miles
Look her up.
I'm about... 5 miles away maybe. Let me know if you need any specific advice about this area at all.

I forgot all about Bong! Cool place. LOTS of camping spaces. The pix I took of the State TT was right in front of Bong Rec. ARea and the road is 142. See link below. Good call! :)
