Fifty Plus (50+) - OT: The Mac store

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just wanted to report that I had to bring my laptop into the mac store yesterday because the latch wouldn't work. Ended up being dog hair...:o
Anyway, I went into the mall, which is one of the larger ones in the Twin Cities, outside of the MegaMall, and it was pretty empty for a summer day. American Eagle had about 10 kids in it, but otherwise it was very quiet with many of the stores being empty.
Then I got to the Apple Store. It was packed. It reminded me of registration day in College. I actually paused at the front door, which was a wide gate-like thing, because there were too many people exiting and entering the store to walk straight in. The age range was 15-70. It was like a party... I'll bet there were over 50 people in this store, taking mac classes, playing with products, or standing in line at the end. I was totally taken by surprise. I had to dodge bodies to get to the back of the store. I started to count employees while I was there but couldn't finish. I would say there were 14 of them?
I've had a mac since 1986 and have visited the mac store since they started them, but I have never* seen it like I did yesterday. I asked her if it was always this crowded, and she looked around and said, "yeah".
Anyway, I was stunned to see this in what I consider difficult economic times. Has anyone seen other stores or restaurants which similarly surprised them? I thought people were pretty much hunkered down right now.
I suppose it could be people blowing their economic stimulus checks?

The LBS the Saturday after gas prices topped $ 4.00 in California. I wondered if all of those people buying racks (sold out) and assorted panniers made it even half way to their destination before they called for a pick up. I hope they all find the pleasure and joy again that they had when they got their first bike.
It's the on going Windoze Vista disaster. Most people have finally gotten fed up with it. Everyone is switching to MAC or upgrading to Linux. I went the Linux route and now my computers run at warp speed and never have any problems.

Solveg,
The mac store in Richmond, VA seems always to be packed. The rest of the mall--not so much.
ftthomas--My friend who works at the LBS, calls his shop "the one bright spot in the economy. We're busier than ever."

The Mac tech was at my wife's office this mornng working on networking a new copier / scanner. I noticed he was driving a new BMW SUV. I'd say things might be going well for him.
I've had Macs since 1985 (the second model, known at the Fat Mac, was my first computer), and I've owned nothing else. I've put up with unlimited crap over the years as a result, both warranted and unwarranted, but I can safely say that I made the right choice.

"Poor economy" = election year. QED.
Our local Mac store is always crowded. One of these days I'm gonna get me on too.

Could be the new iPhone just came out?
Or people are getting tired of Vista

Weird, my Vista runs smooth as butter. Of course, I have a tad over4 gig of RAM on my laptop....
and I learned how to configure it for smoothest operation. ;)

The iPhone 3G won't be in the stores until July 11th.
I went to the Mac store in downtown Salt Lake last September because I finally got tired of paying to keep Microsoft's enemies away from my lame XP system and I wanted Bill out of my life forever. The place was packed on a weekday, and people were slapping down thousands for their products. I went to Apple kicking and screaming, and now I'll never go back. Great products, great systems, fair prices. I don't know what took me so long. I love my I Mac, Airport, I Pod, and (soon) I Phone. I can't stand their smug attitude, but that's a small price to pay - besides, they're entitled to it.

If it's like my area, the answer could be because I don't think we even have a Mac store, but we have a zillion places to buy PCs.

The Apple store closest to me is always packed. Whenever I decide to do a One to One class, I opt for the 8AM or 9AM time slot, before the store opens. I made the mistake ONCE of going in there on a Saturday around noon to look at some new software.
My MacBook Pro is awesome. :thumb: Brings back the fond memories of when I got an Apple II+ (actually my employer got it for me). Those were the days. :)

Yep. I have Vista on 2 of 4 computers and they run great. One has 6 gigs and the other 2 gigs of ram. Shrug. Personally, I've never had Mac fever. Nothing against them. But I like my PCs.
