View Full Version : Global Warming? (OK, maybe not)

Is it just Texas right now? We haven't had a high lower than 97 for like...the past week or so in Austin. Worse yet, when the actual highs hit, they've been about 4 degrees higher than the published highs, so we've been over 100 almost every day. Next Tuesday, we're predicted to hit 103, so 107??
I'm racing both this weekend and next weekend, and both times, my race falls at about 3 in the afternoon, so it's gonna be HOT! Worse yet, all of the races are downtown crits with tons of concrete and buildings around to block wind.
Yuck! Oh well, gotta adapt, right?

I don't know why, but the heat is sapping me more this year too. Normally, I don't mind riding in the heat too much, but the past week has really been really draining for me.
We got spoiled by a nice spring and last year's June deluge.
So, Chris, being a college student and all, do me a favor and ride out to Barton Springs for a nice relaxing swim so I can live vicariously through you.

Haha, I wish. I'm stuck in a boring office with no windows :(
It just seems like it's gotten a *lot* hotter considerably earlier than it usually does this year. Lame.

^^ One factor is that it isn't cooling off. Much has been made by one of our weather guys that we set record high lows for a week straight. For several days, it never got below 80.

Actually, both of us live just north of Hell, er, Houston, so purgatory is probably more apt.

Yeah, coming off the hill I work on for the 5pm commute home feels like I'm riding into a furnace. It's into the sun, and into the wind every night. So the IR is reflecting off the pavement, hitting me in the face twice, and the wind is blowing the heated (by pavement) air right at me. 400W to get down this hill, and I can barely get over 20mph. Once I turn sideways to it, it's not that bad though.
I did hill repeats at 100 degrees yesterday, and just decided to play it safe and only do 4. I brought three bottles for that 1.25 hour ride.
I'm holding up in it better than I thought, but 20 minute intervals are just about impossible to churn out the right power for.

Come to Manhattan and do a Spring Series Race in Central Park. It's usually a few degrees on either side of 30ºF, it's dark, and sometimes it's windy and raining. We won't even talk about the horsesiht you get coated with in the rain.
You Texas guys make me laugh. Hey, wear a Camelbak!
Just be happy it's hot, not wet, dark and cold. Or icy. Jeesh.

Bah.
I did two weeks of 34F rides in the rain in Austin this winter, and didn't miss one day. I'm from Colorado. I've podiumed in downhill races on ski slopes in Feb. I've come back from road rides with 1/2" of ice covering my shoes. I've snowshoed at night, backpacking to pitch a tent and camp at -10F at 10,000 feet.
I can take the cold and the heat.

Give me the Cold and Rain any day over this kinda heat :P You can always put more clothes on, but you can't take them off past a point.
Bah.

...now it's getting cold in here. Anyway, I'm not going to have anybody tell me I can't handle some cold weather just because I carry a TX driver's license. :thumb:

Yeah, the hot wind makes the commute even more fun. My ride is about 80% into the headwind on the way home. At least that translates into a tailwind in the morning...
And Pcad -- quit yer whinin' I got caught out in a lovely thunderstorm the other day. Nothing like 40-50 mph wind gust, and the threat of hail (in hell) and tornados to make life interesting.
Botto -- the thing about hell is we're not sure how big it is. Maybe we need to get into a discussion of layers of hell. Let me consult Dante.

I can't believe it snowed outside Seattle this week. I get the feeling 'outside Seattle' means up the Snoqualmie Pass, and I think that's 50+ miles east of Seattle.

I had the arm warmers and the Don't Flatten Me Yellow Fred jacket on when I left here @ 7AM. By 7:30AM the jacket was stowed under my favorite pickituponthewayhome log and the arm warmers were off.

And TX sucks? I will stop complaining now.
Actually, the answer is that we should all live in San Diego.

No. San Diego is evil. Evil I say. Don't move there. If you currently live there, leave.

It's not *that* bad....to visit. I don't know if I'd want to live there, but my mom's whole family is out there, so we visit often enough and I like it.

Eh, like I said, it's unusually hot for us right now. Then again, most people are probably envious of our Winter weather. Gotta take the good with the bad! Texas (or really Austin) is still a great place to live.
