Did my first 50 miler yesterday.Wasnt bad but for the end of the first 25 you go up A very steep hill on top of Santa Fe dam and i just made it.Round trip was about 3 hours and i dont feel any worst then my 35er's i do on sat's.I'll build up to 75 and by summer will go for a 100.
Congratulations.
I did my first 50-mile ride back in September. I'm training for my first century in February. I've been mixing in shorter faster rides (20 miles or so) with the longer ones. It's been helping me up my speed on the longer rides.

Nice job!
Make 62.5 your next goal... That is 100k (metric century).
The 75 mile goal, actually 80 miles, is the thing you want to do a few times to train for the 100 miler.

I read somewhere that your "max" riding distance is aproximately 3 times your average training ride. So for a century you should make your training rides about 30-35 mi.

Shokhead... ... I know exactly where that steep climb is. As a matter of fact, our Sat morning training ride from Pasadena basically loops around the dam and heads back. Every week, a few riders join us from the bike path where it meets Arrow Highway, adjacent to the dam.
A few yrs back, just a small group of us used to start from the dam and take the bike path all the way down to Seal Beach, have lunch, do a little people watching, and head back. Now that was fun.

I'm in lakewood so to the dam and back was right on 50 miles.I will try going to the beach maybe on the return 25 from the dam. There's two ways to go from the top, straight towards the beer sign and up top and make a left.Where do they both go?

I believe they'll take to to the end of the bike path which is in Azusa Canyon, just a few more miles further north. Now that's another nice ride for the summer....up into the San Gabriel Mts. Where the bike path ends just continue on the highway to the top....lots of fun climbing.
