Yesterday i saw a picture of what appears to be a motorcycle with only one wheel. It may have been some sort of Concept machine. Presumably with some sort of gyro to stabilize it. Anyone know anything about this widget?

Yeah I've seen it. Actually it has two wheels, side by side. Motorcycle Segway.

I can't search for it at work, but I've seen a video on YouTube of some guy riding a dirt bike with no front wheel. Not gyro-stabilized or anything... Just riding a wheelie because the bike has no front wheel.

there's unicycle
and then there's the monocycle. (^the south park IT)

monocycle looks way more futuristic IMO.

and since the wheel is so large, you can just crush all those who stand in your way.

Wow, I had never seen that. Technically, that's a trials bike (or rather part of a trials bike). Trials riders are insanely talented. OK, this isn't quite in the spirit of this thread (these guys are on two-wheeled bikes), but they spend a lot of time on one wheel:
