I've had too many riders nearly bump me as I pass after a coutesy,"onyerleft!". They all say sear it's safe but doesn't seem that way when they drift into me after I do whatever I can to make the passs safe. Last guy just about bumped me but received a very firm stiffarm. All he could do was apologize.
One jogger decided to cut infront of my wife on an underpass. Rocks and river on one side and a steel rail on the other. I had just told her to slow. We both yelled on her left and I rang the bell I had at the time. Sure enough as she started to pass, he made a sharp left cut into her. He bumped her, she swerved and nearly hit the rail with a loud scream. I stopped to give that jerkwad a piece of my mind. He said I had an anger problem. I said ," I sure do when some idiot just about kills my wife"!
But that's ok, it's safe! Especially when you flat, your tire hisses and you miss the warning and slide out of control.:thumb:

Thanks for the opinion, does not pertain to me..but thanks

You got it Johnny Consales!:D
Well I guess it would work for you then. But where we ride, we encounter close to 30 or 40 riders minimum. So I guess your situation may be different. But when we approach a rider with ep's, it's a 90%chance they will drift into us as we pass.
For your safety though, don't think mtb tires won't flat. When they do, they stick into the ground more than roadies and/or more of a chance of getting stuck in the brakes. Plus the worst headbangin' accidents I've seen have been at low speeds (8mph). Not just the speed on roadies that can be dangerous.:o

Out of curiosity, do you wear a helmet on every ride? OR does that not pertain to you either?:D

I wear a helmet when I ride, and I also have my earbuds in with my MP3 player going. I also have a mirror that I look at every few seconds. I don't ride where many others ever are. I live in a small town in Iowa, and I ride the state highway with a shoulder for bikes. I see the vehicles coming, as I pay attention, I see rocks coming in front of me, because I pay attention, can hear vehicles as the approach me from the front or rear as I pay attention. I know I am not the normal rider, but I want to survive, but I also want to exercise.
I was completely against them, until I decided to do a 40 mile ride and was tired of hearing nothing other than my tires on the road. Does it eliminate something I might need to hear. Very possible, but to this point it hasn't. Did I hear my tire go flat, no. But, I also wasn't wearing my ear buds at the time either.
As far as music in my MP3 player. I have over 150 GB of music, so I listen to classical, jazz, bluegrass, rock, very little country. I can listen to almost all types of music as I have always had an open mind when it came to music.

Yes i never go without my helmet. Where i ride my mtb its usually on a terrain called chat..its a coarse sand type stuff and i would not hear the tire "flat" if i had a puncture with our without music..its kind of a noisy substance to roll on. This stuff has kind of the same consistency of sand but its more packed down so it forms a nice surface. It will give if you do hit in though, thats why i said your comments did not pertain to me..its in a rural area i ride and like i said i can go miles without seeng someone. Ill take some pics for you to let you check it out or do a search for Bonne Terre chat dumps or anything like that....Thanks for worrying about my safety though.....

I listen to music all the time, it's never caused me to drift into other riders. In fact, I'd say that of all the erratic bicyclists I see on the bike path, very few are listening to music. I've noticed that when I listen to music, I ride farther, when I don't listen to music, I ride faster. The dangers of riding with music have been greatly exaggerated. Deaf people ride bicycles every day and live to tell about it.
When I listen to music, I like 'Zeppelin or some old school 70's rock. I also listen to the "Podrunner" podcast. I have an iPhone so my music fades down when an incoming call comes in, I tap a button on my earbuds and answer the call. Totally hands free. When the call is over, the music fades back up.
I also listen to "audio books" as I ride, mostly I'm learning to speak better Spanish. Sometimes if there's a lot of cyclists, I'll pop out one ear bud so I can hear what's going on. Today I rode 22 miles without music, it's fun to hammer hard and listen to your bike and get into your breathing and really feel the Zen of the whole experience. But other times it's nice to crank some Robin Trower and just pedal mindlessly.
You can even get a TV for your bicycle:

Dangerous practice, to be avoided. Safer to hear what is going on around you. One guy who rides with our Sunday insists on listening to music during the rides. We take great pleasure in dropping him because he can't or won't listen to directions or take guidance.

Hey man, I'm not trying to be a jerk. But you seem like a new rider from your posts. Just trying to keep you safe and keep you from learning the hard way. When I read your other thread, you're 330 lbs and not worried about an mtb tire going flat? I worry about it and have had one go at 240lbs.
Besides, on a trail you may miss something else of importance, a chain snap, a broken spoke! All these things can be catasrophic if you miss the warning.
OK, no further comments, you're on your own!:D

If you look at the time, it was reposted before you edited your post (thank you very much!). How was I to know you were going to edit? I'm not pychic, I just read the warnings in bike and protable music instructions and practice them!:D
BTW, I didn't take anything you said uncivil. When you start calling me ^$$#^&#& and a *&#^%#& thena *^#&%&, then it's uncivil!:D

You'd lose. My bicycle has no warning about the iPhone nor does my iPhone caution me about riding bicycles. And even if they did, who cares? I don't live my life in compliance with warning labels. This issue has been beaten to death on the Roadie forum, riding with earphones is no big deal. :deadhorse2:

OK, I've analyzed your taste in music and it looks pretty good except for the Jimi Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix will cause you to cross chain and often causes creeky noises to come from your Bottom Bracket. Everything else looks good though, you should have no problem.

Like i said earlier, i thank you for the concern for my safety i really do. I will keep the warnings in mind. I dont ride with music in high traffic areas only on a old bike trail that used to be railroad tracks years ago. The ones we should be watching or the people on their cars that text and use the cell while eating and useing the newspapers. I wont ride on the rode for this reason. You wont here me bad mouth you either.
Thanks for the warning about hendrix...i never knew that...lol

More Anthrax!
Nope!! When I ride on the road, I like the hear the cars coming from behind, and when I ride on the Bike Trails, I like to hear the cylist's behind me say, "on your left!" I thought it was a goofy part of cycling culture, but now after 2 organized rides, I really appreciate it.

I only do on bike paths when i dont have to worry about cars. Whats in your ipod, mp3 player etc? I just made me a riding list it goes like:
I never do, the only place I listen to music is the bus, often because there are usually too many things, I don't want to hear, like the folks who have to talk loud enough into s cell phone, that the other party can hear them, without the phone, funny thing is, these conversations are never in English.....
People, who listen to music players when riding a bicycle or jogging, will at some point have a collision, because they are wrapped up in their own little world. It's like with drunk drivers, it always seems that it's the innocent party that ends up getting the ride in the ambulance (or worse).....

No headphones for me. Too dangerous. I went with radio on the handlebars for my commute. I keep it loud enough to hear, but any car will drown it out. A good Kansas wind or a fast downhill will drown it out too. I can also hear the people I ride with complaining they can't hear it.

Under that thought..anyone of us will have a collision just for the sure amount we ride..we all face the dangers when we ride. I listen to musci on a old path i rdie on where im alone..you possibly ride with traffic...and tell me not one of you have been in your car on the phone...i will not no way no how answer my cell in my car...thats what voicemail is for....
I do if I am by myself, but only in 1 ear. Group rides never.

I listen to music occasionally on longer rides, and I sometimes listen to Nascar races while I ride. I always only use the right earbud and keep the volume set to a level that does not impact my ability to listen to traffic.

I love my Ipod and most of the time I ride with it. Lately I have been using only one earbud. But thats really a comfort thing. After a 2 or 3 hour ride my ears get sore:D. My musical tastes are quite broad. Rap, R&B, Hip-Hop, Rock, Elton John, Billy Joel and even a little Andrea Bocelli. I have had a couple of nasty accidents both with out my Ipod and haven't had one yet with it (knock on wood...maybe I should not have written that:o). Be safe and enjoy the ride and music.:thumb:

NP...i know im not pro at this stuff but i like my tunes..and i figured you had your opinion. After reading some of these posts and threads i need to learn this cadence thing...maybe thats why i only can ride four or five miles over hilly terrain and not fifty like the rest of you guys/gals. Plus im as wide at the shoulders as the doors in my house.

I am newly returned to the bike world, after almost 25 years of driving. I am addicted to my iPod and not having my music or audiobooks was one of the psychological barriers I had to get past. Not wanting to loose my ability to listen to music, but too nervous to stuff earphones in my ear I went a different route. I purchased an iHome Cycler unit. It is a iPod dock/speaker shaped like a water bottle. It even comes with a cage mount compatible with the typical mount points on a bike. It docks with my 60 GB iPod photo (I am using my oldest one in case it gets beat up). It includes a wireless remote unit that mounts on the handlebars. So far it is plenty loud enough and sounds pretty decent. When traffic gets to busy I just pause the music with a quick button press so I can concentrate on more important things. When I get to where I am going I can just undo the latch on the cage and take the unit with me.

I only put my ipod on when I'm doing yardwork. Of course I listened to my walkman everday when I was on my bike as a kid. With no helmet. Of course, I rode on the sidewalk, but still.

I've been considering riding with a single earbud again. I used to ride with one in on the local trails since I hardly ever encounter other people back there. On my commute I'd like some tunes, but I usually end up concentrating on the ride so much that I don't miss it once I'm in the saddle. I have a few bands that are constantly getting played no matter what I'm doing...
Youngblood Brass Band
Rebirth Brass Band
The Black Keys
The White Stripes
The Raconteurs

That said, don't wear headphones when racing or riding with a group...you're gonna get yelled at.

That's one of the problems with cars these days, you have so many things to draw your attention away from driving, radios that now have fancy scrolling displays, so you can see what song your listening to, cell phones, GPS displays, it's no wonder that the average car needs $5,000 in extra safety equipment, to protect the driver when they crash.
Yes cyclists do crash, been there, done that, got the T-shirt (wish it was a jersey, I need a couple of those ), crashing because I am not being careful is one thing, crashing because someone else isn't being careful, that's different.
There are trails where there is almost nobody, and there are trails where there are so many bikes, joggers, runners, walkers, skate boarders, roller bladers, that it's real traffic. I live in a major city, and going downtown I would rather be on the bike then in a car, you just have so many more options when your only half a meter wide:D

For one thing, I don't believe you can hear your tire hiss when it flats with earphones. It's hard enough to hear it without.
I don't think it's a riddle! You do the best you can with what you have as far as safety. If you don't understand that, then you're in trouble.:(
On one ride we had a line of about 6 guys. Guy on the end had buds. He swore it didn't hinder his hearing. We were making a left onto a bridge. About 3 of us signaled and a few others called out the turn and the slowing. He ran into the 3 bikes ahead of him. Thre were some really pissed riders. Your turn is coming if you use buds. Nobody on the trail or around? Yeah, we all know how that goes. The one time you make a move thinking nobody is around is the one time there will be! We all know that!
I've ridden at odd times when dogwalkers THINK there is nobody else around. Never fails. As soon as you approach, the dog is going to dart in your path. If I have a group, I signal to slow knowing stuff happens. It's the safe thing to do and nobody gets hurt!
That's what I believe and that's what has kept me from crashing with 13 years of consistent cycling.

Congrats on 13 years. Hmm let me see, I've been riding 'consistently' for over 40, commuting 'consistently' for 35. My last 'crash' consisted of me going over the bars and into the back of a motorhome back in the mid 80s. I wasn't listening to music.
You keep mentioning group rides...what did I just say about group rides? Only an idiot would be listening to music on a group ride or in a race...but riding alone it's no big deal...again unless you can't walk and chew gum. Unfortunately it seems too many people can't walk and chew gum - or understand the difference between riding with people and riding alone. You're taking the same tack as the gun control folks, safety nannies and others do: you think everyone should be penalized because of the incompetence/ignorance of some. I urge you to rethink that...let's try to address the idjits without infringing on the liberties of those who manage to remain fairly competent. ;)
Oh, and I have heard the hissing of a tire while listening to music, not to mention the more common POP - and my hearing ain't so great anymore. Ironically, I have seen plenty of folks on group rides who can't hear the hiss or the POP (or worse, crash or cause a crash) who aren't listening to music but are too busy yakking and not paying attention to what they are doing or what else is going on around them...shall we ban talking on group rides? :D

Dude, the warning say 'don't ride with earphones'. Usually it's the idiot that can't follow directions that ends up hurting someone else or themselves. I could care less about the idiot but when he risks my safety, he's an even bigger idiot. Doesn't matter if you're in a group or riding alone. I guess you don't understand that part of the debate. "Nobody on the trail or around?", read that part again then maybe youi'll realize I was speaking of both sutuations, not just group rides. Matter of fact, read the warning that is provided with your bike,"do not ride with earphones" Maybe you'll understand it next time. And you talk about idiots!

Not to stir it up Beans..but if you are going by labels, your cell phone manual says do not use while driving..even though its against the law in alot of states now. Have you ever done this or used a cell on your bike..i see that all the time by cyclists too. A lawnmower says do not stick your hand in the grass dispensor while in use, but how many people have lost their hands from that? A atv says you must be over 16, have proper training, and always wear a helmet, these rules are never followed either. They go on and on even the plastic bags they say dont give this to your 2 year old he might choke.
Point is we always have to use caution in every day life because stupid people are out there and if we do something like listening to music while riding we should be ready to take the consequences for actions, but we should not include others in our doings. I commend you on your safety record, i hope i can stay safe that long..i still wont ride in traffic and i dont know any other folks around here to ride in a group...so for now it will be me,,my bike and my ear buds:thumb:

...I like to hear the cylist's behind me say, "on your left!" ...
Cyclists don't catch me from behind so this doesn't happen.
:P ;) :D
