I could only leg press about 14.5 lbs, however, I used to have the same problem. That was about 5 years ago, since then I've used Sachs and learned to soft pedal when shifting. Now, I'm up to 20.2 lbs and I have'nt broke a chain since.

How does your bike move if you can only leg press 20 pounds?

I can only leg press 20 lbs - but I use clipless, and I can leg pull 968.3 lbs.

I'm sure you can find a chain at one of those sites. A chain is pretty much a chain. If you break them, it's probably because it was worn out of installed improperly.

i dont like shimano chains....they break too easy. I have found over the years that sram makes a 20$ or so chain that is very tough they are the only chains I will put on my bike. I have never had one snap.

Who needs chains. Personally I like to use mine to beat away attackers and clothesline horseback riders on the trails. I'm so hardcore I don't even RIDE with a chain. Saves rotating weight. I'm too busy hauling ass downhill slamming back Red Bulls and flexing my biceps between drops to worry about such petty things.

I hate horses and what they do to trails. I curse at the top of my lungs when I pass horses or farms that say they have horses, or any place with a barn really. It may not do much and if ANYBODY hears it they wont have any idea what I am doing, but it makes me feel better.

I was bombing down a hill at a local trail and there were some horse riders off to the side of the trail. I stopped to see what they wanted and they told me that I needed to slow down and yield the trail to them. There were on a public road.

I rode a trail system with a friend once for the first time, and let me say "horses". The trails were so torn up from those stupid animals that I was about to go mental. It was a rough ride even on a fs bike. After we finally got out I put a big spit on the trail map sign.

I hate riding through the **** personally. It smells awful. I don't **** in the middle of the trail and I'd just like the same courtesy. I don't mind sharing the trail as long as they aren't jerks about it. Acting like they're my superior. I could have just flown by and given them the finger but instead I stopped my descent. The guy gave me this whole schpiel about all this stuff I didn't care about. I should have told him off. I will next if any other elitist horseback riders act like jerks to me.

KleinMp99

I didnt encounter any **** on the trails I rode on. If I would have ridden through any **** though, you can be assured I would have picked that **** up and put it somewhere where people would say "what kind of sick person would do this"?

Ever get stuck behind a damn horse that has the squirts? I did, didn't know it, seen it coming, nailed right in the face, yelled out in disgust, idiot rider on horse did not stop. Then there is the time which a whole trail system got destroyed thanks to horse people brfinging their horses through right after 3 straight days of rain.

Nothing like a little projectile vomiting to enhance ANY ride.

Should not TAILgate a horse, no sir. Some of the trails I ride were made by horse riders- rather have horse than dog stuck in my treads-
I like horses- not shure about the riders- probably as many jerks as any other recreation.

PTerman, if you broke your master link? it is probobly a KMC or Sram chain. you can buy a new one, how many miles do you have on your chain?
I'm guessing that it happend when you shifted, and not smoothly either. I've broken my chain twice, both times the master link and both times with a bad shift. I honestly dont think that a normal human can load a chain just by stomping on the gas, there is always an abuse factor.
Also, are you scrubbing your chain now and then?

Sounds like this thread went all to crap ....

I used to get mad at the horse riders in my area, but they actually help us out by carring-in chainsaws and clearing the fallen trees that block out trails. I can bunny hop the 2-3 ft. ones but some of the Redwoods are just a little too big...

I've been riding hard for over 10yrs., and have yet to break a chain. I must be doing something right, like letting up when I shift gears...DUH...

Is it because of the person hanging out the window, and TREES being massive?

Ok all back to the guys chain question..LOL.. If you have having pre-mature chain wear/break problems, there is something else wrong with the drive train and not the chain.

My first question would be do ya lube the chain regularly? If not you deserve to buy chains all the time.

Second question would be are your cassettes and rings in good shape (no teeth missing or bends)?

Third is your chain line out of whack? Is your front derailleur adjusted properly? If it is too high or too low it puts a lot of strain in the chain when you shift.

If it is none of these then I’m at a loss.
