BMX - General advice/info

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Been a roadie since my first 10 speed when I was about 9-10. However, I'm going to put together a BMX for my kid. Just scored a NOS frame for little $. It has a BB for an Ashtabula crank. I plan to put in an adapter for a 3 piece. What length is a "typical" BMX crankarm? She'll ride primarily on the street and it'll be a freewheel. What size chainwheel/freewheel do you guys recommend? I guess BMX uses sidepulls as I don't see any cantilever mounts. What's the good stuff with BMX brakes? Basically I want to put together a bombproof streetbike for my kid who thinks "dirtbikes" look cool. Who knows maybe she'll race?

Hi there Walter,
I too have just bought myself a BMX which needs a overhaul. I noticed that my bike has Dia Compe u brakes which I guess would be a little better than the side pulls you're taliking about, and 175 mm length cranks.
Whether this is standard or not, I'm not too sure. I'm not too sure in the freewheel size department, but there'll be someone here who'll know.
Sounds like your kid's gonna have a pretty mean BMX though. Good luck with the parts!
Rich :)
