Is my Miyata QuickCross from the 90s a cyclocross bike?
It has flat bar, combination of alu and steel frame, CrMo fork, break cables is inside the frame, gear cables is on the side of the frame, it has 700c wheels and 21 speed.

If not can i convert it?
In my point of view a cyclocross is best fitted with 21,18,12 gears am i right?

Put drops on it and it's a cyclocross bike. It's a step below what they called their cyclocross bike, the alumicross, they both shared the same frame but the alumicross had better components and drops. I had an alumicross for a short while and even got to ride it on a cyclocross course before I sold it (too small) and they are great bikes. A little heavy but great nonetheless.

But what is drops?, probably silly quest but..

Rear gear and wheels is missing on it, but the front gear and chain-rings is there Exage 500LX, Is it possible to buy a Exage 500LX today that would fit or would any gear fit..I would like a short cage rear gear on this..but for all i know i need a long cage?

Drops= road style drop handlebars.



I used a Miyata Triplecross as my bike for one season. The word heavy does indeed apply. (though mine was steel and yours is bonded aluminum)

Your bike already has a flat handlebar, and the Exage shifters. If you want to make it "cyclocrossy", and add the drop handlebars pictured above, you'll need.

drop handlebars
brake levers for those bars
some way to shift, bar-end shifters would be the easiest,could also use STI.
a new rear wheel and cassette
a new rear derailleur

when you obtain drivetrain components (shifters, cassette, derailleur) make sure that they are compatible with each other. Don't end up with an old 7 speed freehub, an 8 speed cassette, and a 9 speed STI lever.
