Southern California - new to kern county

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

howdy all. i just recently moved to bakersfield...gag. anyway...i was just wondering where there was to ride around here, if there were any bike clubs, ect.
what i have noticed since i have been here is that most people are into road bikes, which makes perfect sense. there is that beautiful paved bike path, but i am more into the off-road/trails/wilderness. any suggestions are most appreciated.
I live in Bakersfield and do a lot of riding here. For off road rides contact the SSFTA, http://ssfta.com/. You can PM me if you would like to do some road rides.

I'm sorry
Actually there is a great bike club up there - Kern County Wheelmen.

People who scoff at Bakersfield have not ridden there. It's a beautiful place to ride. Check out the Wheelmen website for photos. In October they sponsor the "Spooktacular" an awesome event ride (30, 62, 90 and 2 100 distances).
Any one who has met a wheelmen on a ride will tell you they are nice people. Please give them a try. HAlf the rides I did where because some wheelmen I met talked me into it!!!
Although it's a roadie club, they do also some offroad cycling. Lots of great trails up there.

I've ridden there. I like the desert ok, I just don't want to live in the middle of it. I did the road race there recently... lots of oil stuff.

You're within an hour of world class mtb riding. Kernville, Cannell Plunge. If you haven't tried the dirtier discipline of cycling, this wouldn't be a bad time to start. It's just as addicting as riding road. Whatever you do, enjoy.

ive been meaning to get out there, but with gas at $4.50 and up i end up having second thoughts. also, yes i live on the "dirty side" of biking. i dont own a road bike, but seeing where i live now and the price of gas i may just have to invest in one for commutes back and forth to work.

yeah, it's somewhat prohibitive with the present cost of gas. but don't all in bakersfield own oil wells and have limitless access to cheap gas? ha ha (an ipa fueled laugh, sorry).
upside is riding the plunge is oftentimes a group effort and car pooling may be an option.

You have mountains all around, but will have to drive some. The Kern Wheelmen have had some great riders/racers and might be able to help with the off road stuff, too.
