Southern California - This Rider With 9 Lives

One thing that ticks me off. Riders giving the rest of us a bad name. Not only a that but could have put a really small dent on the hood of my truck. Please remember, a 130 lb racer body has no chance against a 2,000 lb truck.:twitchy:

I was driving in near a college, not in, near. I was at a big intersection, maybe on other car around. I get the green arrow to make a left so I step on the pedal. Yeah, I saw him coming cause I am an excellent driver and very aware of my surroundings. FYI, I have no tickets in my 30 years of driving.

I see the guy coming but I'm expecting him ot stop since he's about 20 yards from the intesection and my light is G-R-E-E-N! I travel about 10 yards when the guy blows the red light. It's been red about 10 seconds at this point. So I stop as he rides about 10 feet away from the front of my truck. Being the excellent driver that I am, I was able to stop with no incident. He's lucky,.....but stupid!

Not only does he risk his little life right in fornt of my truck, but he rides by looking back with a ***** arse grin on his face like. Not sure if it was a grin of, 'haha you missed me' or 'I know it's stupid but I did it anyway'.:o

Someone please tell that guy, being in a full race kit and carrying a backpack is not a free pass for blowing thru intersections?:o

You realize that most vehicles are well over 2,000 lbs? Especially trucks? Even a relatively small truck like a Ranger has a curb weight of 3,454 lbs. Edit: I realize that this can come off kind of snarky, and given our *ahem* history... I should state that it is not my intent.

I would have turned around, caught up to him and flashed him my USCF card and told him that if it had been a non-cyclist behind this wheel he would have been dead meat back there. :D

Off the top of my head I would guess 5,000 pounds, give or take a few hundred...

I didn't mean to be so pedantic, its just that I see people underestimate the weight of vehicles a lot. I hear people say "1 ton of metal" or something like that all the time, when the truth is that even the smallest of cars are pushing well over a ton. Except for that little smart car, which is probably one of the only cars under. Most midsize sedans are well over 3,000, and then you get a tank like my 740 which weighs almost as much as your truck! Edit: that isn't my 740, but its the same model...

I only know the curb weight of my compact sedan (~2700 lb) because I was racing it in SCCA Solo2 autocross and wrote to the association get the car classified in the Street Prepared category. I also knew most of my competitors' car weights, and I can tell you that a Suzuki Swift GT I co-drove for a while weighed 1900 lb, and that's basically the same car as a Geo Metro!!!

Oh, and I would have laid on the horn as the rider went through. At least make the experience unpleasant.

Ofcourse, educating riders is a good thing. Save someone's life by deterring them from taking silly risks! Maybe some of the others will think tiwce once they know the real facts:thumb:

Hmmm...possible. However, off the top of my head, that will change the mass from the original equation. Maybe, if we eat all the roll-ups to compensate for the rope...

I see cyclists doing dumb things all the time, like riding on the wrong side of the road, running red lights, entering lanes without looking behind them first. I just keep my mouth shut. I always feel like saying something. But I never do.
