Well I have read the horror stories and I finally was a victim of the idiocy that is todays word. All I can say is thank God it was just a cup that was pretty empty. It hit me on the arm and nocked my bike computer off, but otherwise did not phase me or make me fall. Matter of fact I was proud that it did not seem to effect me at all. The car was going kinda of slow until I starting speeding up and I did get part of the License plate. Went to the police station and talked with the Police (not the band:D) they said they would send an email to all the officers to look out for the car, but other than that nothing unless I was hurt or there was damage. This on the heels of two cyclists being run over last Sunday morning by an idoit driving home drunk from a bachelor party. What makes me mad is that we live in a society were someone has to a physical or property lose before something is done. Oh well be safe everyone.

Wow! a half filled cup (or was it half empty?), some fries and in my case two months ago, a small jar of mayonase (ha, they missed!). We're gonna have the makings of a sandwich soon.

Actually it was 8:30am the dude had been out all night drinking. The bikers were hit from behind by a Lincoln Navigator. It was instant, so at least they did not suffer. But the dude was out on bail the next day. It's just sad.

It a sad commentary on society, when you are considered foolish for doing a legal activity, because it puts you at risk, against an illegal, but all too common activity. The fact there are still drunk drivers, after all the years of publicity against it, shows that people are not getting smarter. Also means the penalties for drunk driving are no where near severe enough. I have long thought that driving under the influence should mean that your driving permit should be suspended for a period of not less then 5 years, after which your driving record is erased. After your record is erased, you can apply for a learners permit, and go through the whole process again. Driving while you license is suspended, should be punishable by not less then a $25,000 fine AND one year in jail, plus the clock is reset on your suspension (meaning if it's in the fourth year of a 5 year suspension, you start all over again at another 5 years being suspended).
However I think the only solution for drunk drivers, is to make cars illegal....:D

All too true for more than just drunk driving. Sad that people consider somethings perfectly acceptable till it directly affects them. Not till then do they realize it's a NoNo!:o

Still...you need to be caught in the act and or have a boatload of witnesses...like someone said earlier, you just about have to be killed or maimed for anything to be done.
so far i have been lucky... the worst ive had thrown at me is words. this one time it was kinda funny because it was at night and i had all my night time gear on/going, my orange reflective vest, my led head light (flashing) and my led tail light (also flashing) and this group of "kids" were drinking on the front porch of this house and one of them yelled, "hey bright much? i can see you from like a mile away dude" and i just rode on... and i heard one of his friends say, "i think thats the point you moron." hehe.
but yeah, im just waiting to get something "real" thrown at me. i hope its chocolate. :thumb:

Yuck! Eat something that probably lived in the front seat of a pickup truck?!? Not bloody likely!
I had a bag of fast food trash thrown at me a couple of weeks ago and a cop saw them do it. They got a $500 ticket for littering and I was told recently, a ticket for endangering a non-motorized vehicle or something like that. Another $129.00. Then last year, I had a beer bottle thrown at me.

I had a couple "good-ole-boys" nail me right in the small of my back with a half empty beer bottle. Fortunately it was a glancing blow and only left a small bruise.
I called *hp on the cell (aka the highway patrol). They could could have cared less, without an actual "accident" complete with witnesses they don't act. If the general public at large ever actually figures out how much they can get away with (with respect to attacking bikers) it's going to be a bad day for a lot of us.
Honest to God, if you ever want to kill or hurt someone just get them alone on a bike. Run slap over them and just tell the authorities a bee flew into your car.

Whats ironic about the whole thing is where I live, if you throw an object at a moving automobile it is a felony punishable by jail time and the police WILL enforce it. I haven't had an incident with someone throwing something at me yet so I don't know how serious the police would take that here.

I wish I could shoot back. My personal feeling is that IF I AM ATTACKED WITH A DEADLY WEAPON,IT'S MY RESPONSABILITY TO DEFEND MYSELF just because some idiot gets a wild hair up his culo a decides to "mess" with a biker. Than that biker should be able to grab that moron and slap the taste out of his mouth. I don't want to be a hood ornament. If someone driving a car has no concern for my safety and is going to keep me from watching my kids grow up, than who cares what happens to them, they don't care what happens to me.

Something is inherently wrong when the fine for the endangerment aspect is less than the fine for littering. (for some reason Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant just started playing in my mind)

I had a 20 oz plastic mountain dew bottle filled with tobacco spit thrown at me. The car was going 55 MPH I was going 15. It hit dead center on the back of my left calf. The impact tore my soleus muscle. When I got off the bike I could not put any weight on my leg. thank god I was wearing winter weight compression tights or who knows what damage would have been done. I was on crutches for 2 weeks, and 3 years later I still have a scar from the impact on the back of my leg.
When I was able to go to the police station later that week I reported it (I was riding 40 miles from home) I was not the first report of attacks on cyclists on that stretch of highway so the police were actively seeking the culprits; I just added fuel to the fire. They finally caught them about a month later. They threw a baseball bat into the spokes of a rider causing him to get seriously hurt. The car behind witnessed it, called the cops and followed them until the police intercepted them. 16 and 17 year olds.

i have had fake jewerly, coins, air horns, and cups of ice thrown at me. actually the reason i ended up getting my road bike was because i had a cup of ice thrown at me and luckly it hit the down tube on my mtb. traffic was slow enough i was able to chase the car. at mile 3 (i was very motivated to rip this kid out his car) i got within a half a telephone length of the car at a stop light and unfortunetly it turned green and they were gone. thats the reason i got my road bike, if i had it i would have caught them no problem. but i ran out of gear.

I think you will find, that most of the fines are set at a certain point in time, where the amount involved is in real money. The fine for endangerment could have been set in 1899 when the average man made $1/day, few fines however are designed to go up over time. Littering became a much bigger issue some 20-30 years ago, and the fine was increased, remember the adverts with The Native American who was crying over the piece of litter? You need to talk to your government representative, and see about an increase in that endangerment fine, although seriously I think it should involve a couple of years at the "crowbar hotel". Although I really wonder why there is a distinction between endangering someone operating a motorized versus non-motorized vehicle....
I had a half empty Big Gulp thrown at me once. It hit my front wheel and caused me to swerve a bit, but I was able to save it without going down. I was a little shaken up emotionally, but otherwise no worse for wear. I will never understand the mentality that causes people to do such things.

They might as well have thrown a brick at you.

Perhaps it is overkill. Which is why instead of actually carrying the concealed weapon, you should make it appear that you are carrying. For instance on your vest you could possibly iron on some lettering saying "I carry." While it might incite others I think for a majority of people it would make them think twice. I know I would hesitate, but then again I'm a nice person anyway.
Also, I don't believe it's overkill since the goal is to seriously injure someone for amusement... and these injuries can be life-altering, permanent and fatal.

At that speed a direct impact could easily shatter bone provided the bottle doesn't break first, so you're pretty lucky. I imagine the kids were out to have "fun." I wonder if they also consider torturing animals fun, or if they find cyclists lower on the totem pole than even a dog. Sad, really. Any idea what happened to them?

Wow. I read this stories and I just think to myself what I would do if anything like that happened to me. I would like to think I would be calm and rational and call the police, that would be nice. However I would probably end up breaking my personal best top speed and praying that the car catchs a light. Then some onlookers would probably end up calling the police on me....

Heard a story at a LBS about a guy who had a coke can thrown at him. Turned out he was a good racer and caught the guy at a light, reach in the car and punched the dude three time. The story goes that most of the other cars who say it were clapping for the biker. I do not condone that action. I remained calmer than I thought I would and just let law enforcement handle it. Another guy said the couriers carry bolts and either throw back or bust the window when they catch a car. It's more stressful to get even than just letting KARMA handle it.

i just had a big gulp cup full of ice thrown at me today. i knew the stop light was only 2 miles away and traffic wasnt doing more than 35. i couldnt read the plate since a bug owned my right eye 2 miles back so i couldnt see it clearly(this time i was calm enough to look for the plate). so i chased them and the stop light turned green within a telephone poles length (this is the second incident). i was close enough to see the kid that threw the cup hanging out the widow with the  expression. if i caught them im sure bystanders would have had to call the police.

I've had things thrown at me (empty cans or other trash) but nothing heavy.
I've also managed to catch some rude drivers. One almost sideswiped me onetime. I hit my AirZounds horn and the guy just flipped me off. I looked and saw the traffic light up ahead was changing to red. I started to sprint to the car.
His car stopped at the light and I knew I was going to catch him. He knew it too. I could see him watching me in his rear-view mirror.
Just as I was pulling up alongside his car, he peeled out and crossed the intersection THROUGH THE RED LIGHT! Promptly causing his car to be broadsided by opposing traffic! Luckily noone was hurt. The police were called and he was found totally at fault.

I think a U-lock is the weapon of choice. There's a silly book on couriers called "The Immortal Class" that describes a courier smashing a cab window with one.

The concept of karma holds simply that actions have consequences. It's not some mystical woo-woo that people make it out to be. You do evil and evil comes back to you -- sometimes right away.
I've never had anything thrown at me, and never seen or heard of it in Boston. I can't imagine it would be a healthy situation for the driver. Rule 3, don't start...

Guilty on all accounts. A few years ago I got shot in the temple with a paintball gun. I was sure glad that I wear glasses and had my helmet on, because that was the only thing that stopped the ball. I was too mad to get the whole license plate number, but the police did try a search for the car (red jeep cherokee), and that's where it stopped.

heres a good solution, made in USA :)
somethin like that happens around here Ill likely see the car again. Ive had people yell out the window, but when im goin about at 18mph and they are doing 55+ they are wasting their breath, I cant even understand them :) probably over-weight smokers driving trucks/suv's who would die of an asthma attack if they rode a bike for even a mile. Cyclists should have full right to open fire on ANYONE throwing ANYTHING out the widow at them. Although on a hot day, getting squirted with water wouldnt be as terrible of a thing lol. We should also have full right to kill on the spot attacking dogs...your wouldnt understand that one unless you had a dog damn near bite your leg. I got lucky the owner drove his truck down the road to catch me and made sure I was alright then over-compensated for my torn shorts. Ive passed the house a few times since, havnt seen or heard the dog, so its either locked down good or inside :) He bikes with his family and just sounded upset/disappointed his dog chased me. most people would blame me for riding my bike...
and by the way, most states DO NOT allow concealed carry in a vehicle, even if you have your ccw permit. A bike is a vehicle by law, so you might have to have the pistol holstered to the handlebars :) easy access hehe
Have not had anything thrown at me yet while riding, but I have while running. Pennies a AA battery and countless class acts swerving toward me on purpous at the few short points I cannot avoid the road. Sadly I chalk some of it up to not being the stereotypical runner build so people are like lets pick on the big guy trying to be skinny. I am sure I will get something thrown at the bike at some point.

So far the worst that has happened to me was having gum spit on me. It hit and I was definatly annoyed but in hindsight I am thankful that it was attacked with something squishy.
