Since no one is responding, I'll suggest Specialized Hard Rock? I think that's one that is recommended a lot for Clydes. Look on the sticky notes at the top of the Clyde forum for bikes that Clydes ride.

Well, the hardrock certainly is a great bike, no way to denie that one. However it is a tad north of the 330 limit unless he is fortunate enough to be able to pick up a used one. Have you given any thought to the type of riding that you want to do? Do you see yourself riding off the road or do you see yourself lusting after the speed of a road bike? Do you want to eventually commute?
In the 330 range you can pick yourself up a nice used hardtail mountain bike. These bikes have no rear suspension and will be a lot lighter and faster than the wal-mart full suspension models. I would reccomed looking at a Trek 3700 and swapping out the suspension fork for a solid one. Coupled with treks warrenty and awesome dealer network it's hard to see how you can go wrong with it. Don't forget to buy a helmet, seat bag, frame pump, and flat repair kit at minimum. Without these I wouldn't ride any further than your willing to walk. Without the helmet I wouldn't ride at all.
Best of luck to you in your search, if you have further questions feel free to post em. We don't bite all that hard.

You could always check CL for one, I notice a Hard Rock for 70$ on my local CL today.

As someone north of 330 I started on a Hardrock, still have it, and love it! There are, of course, a number of good rides out there, but the Hardrock he become somewhat of a de fact "standard" here in the Clyde forums.
Do a search of Craigs List, use Craigs Helper or similar that allows you to search multiple Craigs List cities at once. You should be able to find a rigid frame, steel, mountain bike of one of the better named brands for $150 or less.

macdole99, If you want something to last build up a chrome moly frame. I've got a Surly Instagator. Go with a dirt jump set up. Those kind of bikes are made to be abused. Don't skimp on the wheels, i went through 3 rear and 1 front wheel untill I found what I needed. Halo SAS 26'' wheel set. 36 hole fr. 48hole r. 36mm wide Bomb proof. I've tried to break em and I haven't. I also went for disc brakes to keep the wear off the rims.
