I picked up a Raleigh Retroglide with a Nexus 7 speed internal gear hub. Haven't dealt with IGH's before, and my first job was changing out the tires to something more road suitable. I looked all over the net, and several repair books, and found nothing on how to disconnect the rear tire. I butchered it, but got the job done.

Is there a more simple way to do it? I took off the nuts, then pretty much dismantled it to get the cable off. In the process, I had to loosen the nut that holds the shifter cable and mangled it pretty badly. I couldn't see doing it on the road in the event of a flat unless you bring an entire workshop with you. Any thoughts?

Loosen the barrel adjuster completely, and move the wheel forward a bit in the dropouts. That should let you easily remove and reinstall the nut from the cassette joint. Act in reverse to put the wheel back on.

K6 Thanks. It was a V8 moment, but I hadn't thought of that. I didn't know you could take the cable guard off until after dismantling the thing, and by then I was pretty hot. Sounds like the right idea. Now I just have to keep playing with the cable tension to get it shifting correctly again. Thanks!
