I've got the pre-race breakfast routine down pat, but I've got an afternoon race tomorrow, and don't know what I should be doing for lunch.
Go ahead and eat a regular meal? Stick with a peanut butter-banana sandwich or two? Just eat breakfast twice?
Any suggestions?

What do you do when you train in the evenings (if you do)? you might consider doing that. Personally I'd just eat a bigger breakfast split into a couple sittings (~1000cals) and then maybe eat a banana with a sports drink pre-race.

Peanut butter and honey is your friend (well it's my friend, I don't know if it's your friend or not). Don't eat anything solid with less than 90 minutes before we go off though, unless you're used to doing that.
And Rob's going to have the beers waiting for us at the finish line.

Are you doing 5s at 3/3:10? I'll eat lunch; that's way too long to go on breakfast alone. Just hope it's not as hot as last year!

Mike-
Don't over think it. That is just a big negative. You are riding really well right now. Just go with the flow and you will be fine.
(And for the love of G*d don't eat a big greasy lunch!)

Hey thanks! Well, plan A was to bring a grill and have a few nice, juicy (veggie) burgers at about 12:30 for the 1:00 start, but I guess I'll pass on that.
I'm racing the 4's at 1:00 - I'm sure you're going to tear them up, Kendall. Good luck!
Ken, I will be rocking the peanut butter. Tell Rob not to fall through, as I'll be needing a beer, I'm sure.
Time for bed!

Dude chowing heavily 1/2 hour beforehand -- not a good idea. I like something solid, carb-heavy about 3 to 4 hours beforehand and then a gel right before I start, like 5 minutes beforehand. During the race just a sugar drink w. electrolytes unless it's longer than 2 hours.
kensuf, love that sig.

Ha, oh, I know -- That was a joke. I'll be done with solid food by about 11:00 at the latest.
how long is that race, and what time is breakfast?

Breakfast was at 9:00, a nice snack at 11:00, then 40 miles at 1:00, winds gusting up to 40ish straight into your face on the uphill side of the course.

Mike, it was great racing with you this afternoon.

Glad you guys got to race. They ended up canceling the Cat 5 race; I stood around in the rain and lightning for a while just to make sure. I actually was sort of looking forward to racing in that, as at least it would've been cool. :)
Lightning's not cool, you don't want to get struck by a bolt and wind up like Terri Schiavo.
I raced according to our teams plans and felt that we had a good chance of getting one of our two protected guys on a podium, but I dropped out after lap 5 because of the lightning strike in the field to our right.

I left pretty soon after the 3's finished and rode back to Gainesville. I got in ahead of the weather. The radar looked scary for you guys after really nice racing weather earlier in the day.:(

It was great racing with you too Ken! This was the first time I've raced with any teammates in the field. Good times.

It got pretty ugly. The worst part was when you could see it looming out over the horizon, and you knew it was going to suck.
No, wait, the worst part was when I was getting pelted with hail while riding into a 35mph headwind uphill.
Had I seen even a hint of nearby lightning, I'd have been in a field, curled in a ball, trust me.

P.S. How many laps did we end up doing? 6? I lost count, but was pretty surprised when they announced one to go.
Yea we did 6. I figured with the storm coming in they would shorten the race. It looked like half the start finish set up was down when they gave us 1 to go.

Down is an understatement. As I mentioned, I pulled out after seeing the lightning strike and rolled in to the pit after lap 5. There were five guys trying to keep the officials tent from being blown over. It sort of took itself down.
