Bought a bike this morning before I could talk myself out of it - Giant Cypress. My brother-in-law took me out to an old airfield in Brooklyn. I didn't believe it, but I guess it's true that you never forget how to ride a bike.

Mostly I rode in circles learning how to shift the gears and use the brakes. Adjusted the seat until I found a height I liked (a little higher than the one the bike shop set for me). Haven't really figured out how to sit. Tried to find the "sit bones" but never really found a comfortable position. Seemed to spend some time sitting on my goodies. I think I put too much pressure on my arms because my wrists hurt.

Anyway, it felt pretty good. Good enough that I'm going to try it again tomorrow on the bike path through the park by my house.

Great work Froggy! Way to go with the new bike and your first your ride. You do know we do require pictures of all new bicycles :).

If your sitting on your goodies and your wrists hurts it is possible that you are stretched too far forward. To remedy try having the bike shop raise your handlebars a bit and move the seat forward on the rails. This will help reduce the stretch and will hopefully make your ride a bit more comfortable.

Keep riding, don't over do it, you'll get sore but you'll also get used to it, keep adjusting things so it feels right.
One of my bikes is a Cypress (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3110/2574090570_29941144b4.jpg) too and really like it.

The sit bones will find you, don't worry. :p

Floyd Bennett field is the old airfield your brother took you too. Lots of trails for biking and hiking, and they offer kayaking and wind surfing on wheels (whatever that's called). Wrongway Corrigan took off from FBF on his solo flight to Ireland.

As for your saddle, try moving it forward, tilt it up, down, level, etc. until you find the comfortable spot where you're not sitting on your family jewels or going numb. You'll probably find your sit bones tomorrow when your ass is sore. Give it a week or two and it'll go away cuz your ass gets used to the saddle. If you still can't get comfortable, get a different saddle.

I took a picture of the bike, but I cannot find the cable I need to download the picture. I'll post the picture soon. Was surprised this morning to find that my backside wasn't sore but my knees hurt like hell.

I think Bau and jyossarian are right about moving the seat forward. I noticed that I kept wanting to sit further back on the saddle. I'm going to take another ride today and bring it back to the LBS this afternoon.
