I am looking for a winter beater. I came across this bike at a yard sale yesterday. It has Suntour components and Sugino crank. It is a 10 speed. The shifters are on the stem. It needs new cables and tires and a good oiling but looks to have been garage kept. And it fits. Is it worth fixing up?

If it is worth fixing, I'd like to put bar ends on it - possible?

If it is worth fixing, I'd like to put bar ends on it - possible? For a winter beater, a $10 bike in good condition needing only new cables and tires and lube is definitely worth it. But if you want comments on the bike beyond that, we need to know more about it-- pics would help. So would a description of the tubing material and components. In other words, we can tell you more or less how great a bike (or how average a bike) this is once we know more about it.

I wish I could tell you more. I don't have it - yet. I won't be able to pick it up until Thursday. Once I have it I'll post some pics.
Thanks for taking the time to answer me.

A 10-speed Univega with stem shifters will be 'low end', but probably a well built, nice riding bike. If you like it, $10 and a little elbow grease is an excellent deal.

I have a hard time passing up any $10 bikes, other than the department-store variety. You'll probably spend another $50 on the tune-up parts if you plan to do the work yourself.

It sounds like a good deal to me, buy it and take lots of before-and-after pictures.

It's quite possible that this one is mid-range.

If it is worth fixing, I'd like to put bar ends on it - possible?I didn't understand your question at first, Did you mean you want to convert from stem-mounted shifters to bar-end shifters? if so, yes, that should be possible.

Yes, I want to put bar-ends shifters on it. I prefer them to any other shifting mechanism. There is some work I can do myself; but I am a believer in supporting my local LBS for the things I am clueless about - like shifters.

As soon as I get it I'll post pictures and the serial number that is across the bottom. Promise.

I got to take a closer look at it. It is a Safari Ten Mixte frame. Diacompe Brakes.

I found an exact picture (Thank you, Tios) minus the bows:
