Tandem Cycling - Stoker Toeclips Drag When Riding Solo

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
My stoker uses platform pedals with toeclips and straps. Every once in a while when we are on tour, I have reason to take the tandem out on a solo ride, like when I need to make a quick trip to pick something up from the grocery store. When I ride the tandem by myself, the stoker toeclips drag on the pavement with each pedal stroke. Is there any easy way to prevent this?

have you tried tighening the straps all the way down?
If that's not enough, might try rubber bands, or small bungees, to hold the toe clip the the crank arm, so the clip is always pointed up the crank arm.
Of course! Silly me. Sometimes it just takes someone else to point out the obvious. A bungie or strap that secures the toeclip to the crankarm should work quite well, as long as it doesn't get tangled in the chainring.

I ran into that problem one time [changed pedals] and I took the strap and wrapped it around the crank arm. No extra anything and was easy to switch back. The strap started at the pedal, around the crank arm, and then to the toe clip.
Yep, elastic bands to hold the toe clips is what I do.

. . . or, run a small bungee from capt. left pedal to stoker's left pedal; do same with right pedal
Lotsa choices, been there and done that!

There is even a response from Sheldon Brown recommending the bungee/elastic cord method.

This, no extra parts, takes a grand total of 30 seconds.
