Hello everyone,
Last week or so I posted a thread where I expressed an interest in purchasing a road bike. I've been riding a comfort bike on wooded trails for the past 2 years. My main concern was my weight. I've lost over 50 some pounds over the last 2 years just by riding and today I weigh in at 270lbs. I'm currently losing 2 - 3 lbs a week since I started Weight Watchers....as opposed to the 2 to 3 lbs a month I've been losing just riding.
I've looked at several road bikes at my LBS and I'm leaning towards the Cannondale CAAD9-5 over the Giant OCR-1. The Giant looks like it would handle my weight with no problems. I'm concerned about the wheel spokes on the Cannondale CAAD9-5 as there aren't as many as on the Giant.
I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has been riding a Cannondale CAAD9-5 and weighs more that 250 lbs. Any problems? Should I upgrade anything?
Thanks,
Brian
ride the wheels until they give you a problem. I rode the Bontrager SSR wheels (on my Lemond) when I was 280lbs. They are 20/24 spoke and I had zero problems and only needed one truing in the rear from when a friend bumped into me.
It really depends how hard you are on your equipment. Everything should be fine.

At 220 I plan on a replacing any stock wheel that comes on a bike. Anywhere from 4,000- 73000 miles a year, most I can get is 10 months. That's been on the 12 bikes or so that I've had. Once wheel lasted. That was my Cannondale's Mavic CXP30 which is about the same profile as the Deep V.
I won't make a choice based on stock wheels. I say get what you can out of the wheel then build a better one!:D

I am 280 right now and I am riding a CAAD8 from last year with what looks like the same SHimano wheelset. Same number of spokes at least. It has been ok so far. I havent felt uneasy on them.
I would ride it till you have problems and go from there. Im not expecting the wheelset to last a million years, but thats why I bought the better frame and can upgrade from there.

I have the 9-5 and the stock wheels have 16 spokes. I haven't been uneasy on them but I'm a tad under 200#, upgrade to something beefier.

When do you sleep!!!
I'm 300, I have the 07 CAAD9 and love the bike, hated the wheels. The only ride I did on them was the test ride which was about 5 miles. I could hear them strain so I promptly got some new wheels. Velocity Deep V's 36 front and back with Ultegra hubs. I kept the wheels and put them on my Specialized Allez Comp when I sold it.

Don't worry about the frame, Cannondale tests frames upwards of 1500 pounds of force. Not that 1500 is the weight rating, but Cannondale doesn't give a frame weight limit anywhere. The wheelset is a different story, but wheelsets can be changed.
