Bicycle Mechanics - Ultegra SL dumping chain...

Hey guys,

I've got a bike set up with the new Shimano Ultegra SL. I've had it in the bike shop twice now trying to get the front derailer to shift properly. 3 out of 5 times when I shift from the big ring to the small ring it drops the chain (when in the lowest gear on my cassette - it doesn't do it otherwise).

Could the inside derailer stop be set wrong or is this user error?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

If by lowest gear on your cassette you mean easiest (also, "largest"), then your problem could stem from being in a large-large combination, which most derailleurs aren't designed to handle, my recommendation would be to avoid that combination, (does it work on the second, or third largest cogs?). Also, unless your chain rubs on the inside of the front derailleur when you're in the easiest combination on the bicycle the low stop could be a little higher.

I went from big-big to small-big on my bike and ended up with the rear derailleur stuck in my spokes. It's generally not recommended as pointed out above and it seems from your post that it works when not in big-big.

The big-big combination should be avoided but you should be able to remedy said situation by increasing fder cable tension to slow the chain and allow it to land on the inner ring instead of overshooting.
Turn fder adjuster counterclockwise to increase tension; try 1-2 turns at a time but check to ensure up and downshifting still functions as desired. AVOID BIG-BIG!!! VERY ROUGH ON EQUIP., SHIFT FDER INSTEAD.
