View Full Version : What camera do you carry?

I'm thinking of picking up another digital camera that could be useful when I'm travelling away from the family, but also could be readily slipped into a jersey pocket when cycling.

Any recommendations for me? Something that isn't too heavy on the greenbacks would be good....

Work great!!!

Other models are cheaper....fits in a jersey pocket no protection needed...

I have a Canon SD1000. Small, seems to be well made and was pretty affordable ($149? on sale). Seems to work pretty well.

Previously I had a Nikon that had horrible shutter lag (press the button then wait until the camera decides it wants to take the picture......).

Do you have any links to pictures you have taken with it ? I was considering getting one of these for sweat resistance.

My second choice is a Casio exlim Z80 and a small Zip lock bag ;) only $159 at a certain large retailer on sale.

Thanks guys -- some good leads here. Any other options out there?

When I'm not carrying the big guns, I've got a canon SD800. I like wide angles, and you can hack the firmware to get raw files if you want 'em. Decent quality, especially considering it costs less than a lens for a slr.

I have been happy with Canon. My current bike camera is a 5+ year old S400. I had to send it back to Canon once and have them fix a problem where it wouldn't read the CF card. They had the camera back to me in about a week and they also cleaned the lcd, the viewfinder, and the lens. I'm not really recommending you buy a used one on ebay, just saying I've had good experience with all three of my Canon cameras and you probably can't go wrong with them. Good luck and I look forward to seeing some of your ride photos!

I bought a Fuji FinePix FD31 after a lot of research, mostly because it has great low light performance. I HATE shooting indoors with a flash and this camera lets me shoot flashless.
I do with it had a wider lens. It's about equal to a 35mm on a 35mm camera. I'd rather have a 28.
But other than that it works really well.
Check my flickr page. Almost all bike photos are from that camera.

Curtis when did you morph into MyLilPony? :)

I use a Fuji FinePix F20. I took this with it.

There are a lot of pictures on our website, but it's hard to tell which camera was used for each.

Here's my new guy. Fits great in a jersey pocket but it's a little heavy (I really wanted AA batteries) so it can kind of twist your jersey around. I like that it has an automatic lens cover, it turns on pretty quickly, real easy to use on the fly.

I don't especially like the Olympus-specific memory card and it doesn't have a viewfinder for when it's too bright to see the LCD.

Second on this series of Canons. I have an older version (SD600-6MP) and love it for the size, weight and convenience. But it does have the drawbacks of a point and shoot with the lack of manual adjustments but you can't have everything.

Hey Scott, that's the same one I bought for the ALC ride but in black, and it got run over on the 4th day:mad:
I brought it back and told them it didn't work! They went for it, so I traded up a bit for the canon sdll00 but I really did like that olympus...super light! Compared to my old Canon

I have a little Sony DSC-W50.

Its been decent for all that I do with it. Its pretty portable and takes a decent shot, but it has some of that "digital" lag associated with trying to capture anything moving, kind of bummer, but all in all its a good little camera.

Thanks a lot guys -- BF seemed to prevent me from getting anywhere close to logging in yesterday. Methinks some shopping for a nice compact Canon on the weekend is in order.

I have this guy:

http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/panasonic/dmc_fx9-review/camera-front-angled.jpg

It's a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9, ultralight, very portable, very fast. However, I think I might be on the market again because this little guy can't take low-light pictures, or blacks are extremely noisy (I'm a big fan of night shots). It has a LiIon battery and the whole thing weighs like 3 ounces. It fits well in my jersey pocket and I tend to forget about it, it's so light. It works very well in daylight, and takes very good scenery shots.

Some good examples here (http://www.mooworld.org/rafting/kings_canyon_2007/).

If anyone is interested, I'd let it go for $75 (I paid $350 3 years ago) specially for my NorCal BF buddies.

More info here (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/panasonic/dmc_fx9-review/).

I use a Sony DSC-T10 because the sliding lens cover lets me pick it up and shoot one-handed. I also recommend using a bento box instead of a jersey pocket, makes it really easy to reach for the camera and shoot without taking a hand off the bars or turning around.

I don't have much trouble accessing the camera usually back right pocket. (who needs handle bars anyway? they just get in the way!)
My problem is I have Ham hands, so I tend to drop stuff. I try to slip my hand throught the loop on the camera and then pull it out of my pocket, but doesn't always work.
