Bicycle Mechanics - Shimano dura ace wheelset-new, rear hub seems very tight!

2008 Scandium tubeless wheelset ridden a few days, but the rear hub seems very tight. It doesn't spin very nicely on the stand and does not have the familiar clicking sound of the pawls. Are the bearings too tight or is this normal and they take time to break in?

Sounds like it's assembled too tight. Bearings don't need time to break in. But be sure it isn't contacting something when you spin it, like a brake pad.

Why are you commenting on the freehub? Does it work correctly?

I backed off the preload on the rear hub and it is spinning better. I am not used to a rear wheel spinning so quietly, but these do. Not the heavy clacking of a Mavic wheel. I don't know how the internal pawl/spring mechanism affects sound, but I assume it's working.

These wheels are very good. They are noticeably lighter, stiffer yet with better ride quality, and are very responsive to power changes on acceleration and hills. They are great for stop and go riding in traffic. Worth every penny.

What cassette are you using? I had to use a spacer w/ my Shimano cassette, as it was rubbing against the 7850 wheel hub. Still seems a bit tight when I spin cassette by hand, but rides fine. Really like the wheels, as they seems to accellerate quickly.

Just in case...

If you spin the cassette by hand, it won't spin very much. If you hold the cassette and spin the wheel, the wheel should spin really well.

Also, I have one set of wheels that is absolutely silent -- great if I wanted to be a cop, not so great if I want to be heard (unlike my new-used Fulcrum set :p).

It's supposed to test the OP and whether he's holding the wheel and spinning the cassette instead of holding the cassette and spinning the wheel.
