Great Lakes - Detroit Mi. Help

I am new to road bike training and travel to the Detroit Michigan area on a regular basis for business. If anyone knows some good roads to ride on, I would appreciate you input on the directions to the locations.

Doug is exactly right. If you're staying near the Detroit Metro Airport or the west suburb area, I could suggest some very nice rides. I don't know the area north of Detroit or the east side very well.

If you're in northern suburba, we have a group called Team Clydesdale that rides every Saturday morning.

Thanks for your responses. When I am in Detroit I typically stay in the Troy, Warren or Dearborn areas. If there is a great place to ride (good road & less traffic) I'll don't mind driving to it.

Near downtown, Belle Isle is an awesome ride. I forget how many miles per loop. I know a lot of the Grosse Pointers come from Cadiuex and Jefferson down to Belle Isle and take the loop a few times and head back north. From what I hear thats an awesome ride. I believe thats good for about 20-30 miles.

I know you're in Troy but it may be worth the drive for you.

Another guy who rides downtown often is 'Gromit' p/m him he knows these areas well.

**A lot of people may warn not to ride in downtown Detroit. They say because of crime. If there is anything to be worried about it will be cars and only cars. I love rides downtown.

Those neighborhoods you mentioned are car ridden. A lot of suburbanites driving way too fast. Be careful. If you have any other questions feel free to p/m me or Gromit.

When you are in Dearborn that is easy, Edward Hines drive. Starts in Dearborn and goes to Northville with a super wide shoulder, 35mph speed limit, and light traffic most of the time. It is around 20 something miles long if I remember correctly.

I'd suggest you ride Stony Creek Metro Park... it's about 20 minutes from Troy... awesome park. You can get a 15 mile ride out of one loop... follow this map to see how. Hey, I grew up in Troy, but I live downtown near Wayne State now. I have to say that riding in Troy is murder. Cars travel extremely fast (50+mph), there is barely a shoulder, and a very high curb.

If you are in Troy go to Stoney for sure. It's beautiful and you might get picked up by another group of riders. If you want a more leisurely ride, come down to the city and go to Belle Isle. Belle Isle has some pretty heinous headwind since it's on the river, but ride around it a few times and then head to Atwater brewery for some great micro brews and food.
