In the spirit of another thread, I felt that I should ask this question: How much weight is too much to lose in a certain amount of time? As of October 1st, I weighed 330 lbs. Last time I weighed about a week ago, I weighed in at 244. I realize that is a lot of weight to lose in a short time, but I feel great and have noticed no adverse side effects so far. Everyone is warning me that I am losing i too fast, but I eat sensibly and bike around 20 miles per day. It just keeps falling off of me. Any advice? Should I do something to slow down my weight loss? Am I okay the way I am?

Thanks.

be sure that you are getting enough calories. if you do not get enough, it will shut down your metabolism and you will start to gain weight again. I have heard that the minumum amount of calories you should eat is 10 times your body weight...in your case that should be 2440...you will still be losing weight, but not as fast and a little bit more controlled.

See.. that's the thing.. I can't imagine eating that many calories. That just seems like way too much.

For someone of 244 pounds, 2440 is not alot of calories. How many calories do you eat a day?

I easily eat that in a day (active days) and I'm 5'5" and 125 pounds.

Hi,
great job! You have come to the tricky part. I would suggest having a Doc check your ketone levels, and general health. He couls actually tell you how you were doing. All we can do is guess. My guess is you're doing great. But personally I would want to be sure. The consequences of being wrong can be nasty.

I agree with that. That's a lot of weight to lose so quickly. You should explain this to your doc. Get it looked into, for I don't think it's good to lose so much in such a short time. Get it checked for peace of mind.

Phatman, I think the general average is 2500 cals per day for men, and 2000 for women but that's very general. If think he should make note of what he eats in a day and check the food labels for the calories consumed. It'll be a good measure.

He could also buy some KetoStix from a pharmacy to do a quick check on the ketones.

I'm no doctor, but can share my experience.

Between January and June I lost 70 lbs doing what you did. I'm now a small weak man, IMO. When I weighed 240 lbs i was strong as an ox and always got the call when someone wanted a piano moved. However, while riding high on my weight loss endeavor, I lost way to much muscle mass, shocked my system, and now I can't process food....I need to gain weight, and can't. I weigh 160 and have trouble opening jars.

I became so focused on my weight loss (ego) I feared that if i stopped dieting and exersizing, I would never be able to reclaim the magic. I needed to keep rolling, so I thought. Well, I should have slowed down and listened to everyones advice.

At the very least see your doctor. Most folks say one pound a week, At your size, 2-3 may be okay untill you break 200 if you are avg. height (once again, that is just my opinion).

I notice you say that you "eat sensibly", based on my experience, I doubt it. What you are taking in may be okay if you were sitting on the sofa all day, but 140 miles a week on a bike for a guy your size will burn over 15000 calories a week (1000 calories and hour?)...and that is 5 pounds a week right there....not to mention the energy you use under normal circumstances. Your body is eating itself, fat and muscle alike. Essentially, you are on the Atkins diet, except all the fat and protein is coming from your chest, arms, legs.

I understand how happy you may be with your weight loss but don't forget about your overall health.

If I were you I would consider eating a lot more and see how it goes after a month.

Hope this helps and i apologize if i sound a little harsh,

Last July I was 205. I now weigh 162. I'm 5'10" and still have a nice little rescue ring around my waist. It's frustrating because I can't seem to get rid of it. I've had a very hard time losing weight for the past month. It seems the rules change when you get down to my weight/height combination. When I diet, I think my body is going into hibernation mode since I don't lose weight but I do have a lack of energy. I keep track of my calories and try to eat around 1700-2000 a day. I hate this ring of fat and am starting to cave into the reality that I may never get rid of it without liposuction (which I am not considering)... I ride about 125-200 miles a week and do about 2-3 sessions of weight training....

I forgot to mention, I also add calories to compensate for riding.
