I don't know this area very well apparently.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=monlaco+%26+clark,+long+beach,+ca&daddr=hawthorne+%26+carson,+torrance,+ca&sll=33.814097,-118.256149&sspn=0.065179,0.10643&dirflg=h&ie=UTF8&z=11

Is this route generally ok? I'm comfortable taking the lane and all that, but I really don't like being on a road with a line of parked cars since I tend to get bullied into the door zone if the road is too wide to control dominantly but too narrow to share.

I know the area very well you have many routes from were you are but picking one with less traffic would be my choice Sepulveda Blvd. can have a lot of traffic at times.
Id consider Lakewood to Spring St. turn Right (or down to Willow St. make a Right) on South St. turn Right make a Left onto Wardlow it turns into 223rd st. go past Western turn right on Cabrillo Ave. turn left onto Carson St. to the mall. You have many streets to pick from from this route find one with best traffic for the time your riding road surface are pretty good on these streets also and fairly wide lanes for you.
LB to Torrance Mall (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=8250532447861988778,33.818661,-118.167640%3B3829132183706018547,33.824000,-118.313878&saddr=monlaco+%26+clark,+long+beach,+ca&daddr=Cherry+Ave+%4033.818661,+-118.167640+to:33.824045,-118.314235+to:hawthorne+%26+carson,+torrance,+ca&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=16&via=1,2&dirflg=h&sll=33.822993,-118.310416&sspn=0.012443,0.019226&ie=UTF8&ll=33.809105,-118.23452&spn=0.199115,0.307617&z=12)

Good route! One alternative to taking Carson St (which can get a little busy):

Continue west on 223rd St. which turns into Plaza del Amo (after you pass Lowes).

In 1/2 mile, you'll come to a 5 point intersection. Take Washington Ave. west. After a block, Washington dead ends at Wilson Park. Turn right and skirt around Wilson Park's parking lot. It'll lead you to Jefferson St. Go west for 1 block and turn left at Crenshaw Blvd. Immediately turn right at Plaza del Amo. This will lead you directly to Del Amo Mall.
