After reading the bring back the english three speed thread I thought I would ask what three speeds do you have/ride? I don't have the pleasure of owning an English three speed (yet),but I do have a like new 1972schwinn speedster and an old german made bike with an s-a three speed
Below is the german bike I don't have a pic of the schwinn yet
this picture doesn't do justice to the color of the bike the red is actually a matalic cranberry red

For Starters I have my Raleigh "Resto-improved" Twenty. http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q219/Sirrus-Rider/07%20Bikes/RalieghTwentypostupdate.jpg

I also have another Rootbeer Brown Raleigh Twenty that is inoperable at the moment and I have no pic of.

Then on the more modern side is my '07 Schwinn Town & Country Trike:

In alphebetical-order and BTW, each of these is in a fully refurbished condition with new cabling, rubber, and chains as well as recently cleaned and re-lubed.

1) HOLIDAY SPORTSMAN - a mid-sixties American-made, S/A AW-hubbed, copy-cat of the then still popular "English racers" and sold as a gas station promotional bike. A large gas station chain had bikes badged with their logo similar to what Sears and Western Auto did.
2) RALEIGH SUPERBE
3) RALEIGH SPORTS -a ladies bike daily rider used by my adult daughter for work commuting.
4) SCHWINN CONTINENTAL - a pair of 27" alloy rims laced with S/A AW rear and S/A GH6 Dyno front, top tube quadrant shifter, front and rear wingnuts, fenders and chainguard, upright handlebars and Schwinn DeLuxe mattress seat, a late-thirties art-deco Schwinn headbadge, and a Carradice saddlebag add up to a bike cosmetically backdated to evoke the look of "English clubmen bikes".
5) SCHWINN RACER - this one's my grocery-getter beater bike. Ratty old Racer with a S/A AW rear and S/A GH6 Dyno front. Wald double basket/rack on the rear, a pair of painted fenders of unknown origin but possiblt Huffy.
6) SCHWINN SPEEDSTER - S/A AW rear.
7) STEYR - a very nice late sixties Austrian 3-spd lightweight made in the mold of that era's 3-spd bikes-in-general. A STYRIA rear hub which has innerds seemingly exactly the same as an S/A AW.

All of these are available as daily riders. My rider preferences? In order of preference:
-----------
#5 first only because it _is_ the grocery getter and will be grabbed whenever needed for that purpose.
After the above obvious choice for a shopping ride come the recreational riders:
#2
#4
#7
#1
#6

Well I have two three speeds, but I ride neither of them, yet. One was promptly disassembled as step one in a plan to strip, de-rust, and overhaul it for my wife, a folding, Rog bike with a shimano 3-speed hub.

The other is break-apart Sears Tote/Cycle. I got it running as smoothly as its warped old tires would allow, which was actually pretty smoothly, all things considered, but then the dry-rotted rear tire self-destructed, and I decided to replace the whole tire with something that had less rust and less wobble. Still waiting on parts to get it back into service, although one of said parts is a newer, SA, three speed hub to replace the current one. Not because the current one isn't working, but beefing up the wheel meant going from 28 to 36 spokes:

I love the old 3-speed bikes; especially Raleighs. My current colletion consists of: 1972 Raleigh Sports (aka "light roadster") with Pletscher rear rack, bottle-generator light system and large seat bag. This is my Suburban Utility Bike. 1975 Raleigh R20 folding bike in 90% origianl condition. 1958/70 Raleigh Trent Sports. I'm not sure about the date on this one. The S/A AW-3 hub is dated 1970 but the last catalog entry I can find is 1958. The seriel number doesn't match up with anything I can find to pin-down the actual production date. Currently I have an FW hub that I'm going to swap-out the AW-3 inners with. Then I'll have a nice 4 speed "clubman" style bike. Yes, I do have the proper trigger shifter for it. My go-fast road bike is a 1982 Univega Super Strada that got me into Classic/Vintage bikes. I don't ride it much and will probably sell it in the near future. PG.

Brand 'Union', type 'Kaptein Flamingo Sport'. Union is one of the large brands over here (Netherlands).

This was my first (and, till about 6 months ago, my only) adult bike, given to me by my father when I was about 12. Everyone else got a new bike at that age, I got a 2nd hand one my dad fixed up... ;) Judging by the hub (Sturmey Archer) the bike was made in '78. I got it in '85 after my father rescued it from the dump and restored it to as-new condition. Was then used daily by me to go to highschool (18 km round trip, 5 days a week for 6 years). Still has the same chain, etc. it had back then. Requires hardly any maintenance at all, just keeps on going.

About 10 years ago I installed more sportive handlebars, which proved to be a big succes as it was much easier on my back.

I didn't realize how much I like this bike till I got an old Peugeot UO8 'racing' bake without fenders, dynamo, lighting, carrier rack, lock, etc. It took a few weeks on the UO8 for me to realize how nice that old Union 3-speed actually is for everyday use.

1. early 70's Triumph with SA AW hub
2. mid 80's Shogun 400 road bike converted to 3-speed with the SA hub laced into a 700c wheel
3. early 70's Royce Union folding bike with a Shimano 333 hub; similar to Rob_E's ROG bike above

I just sold a 1969 Phillips on Boston CL for $80. It was beautiful, but too big for me.

Currently riding this a lot, though it's technically a 4 speed, with a 1965 Sturmey FW four speed hub.

Perhaps by the end of this summer I'll have finished the Gentleman's Express, a 3 speed based around a 70's Dawes Galaxy frame, alloy rims, alloy cranks etc for a lighter weight quicker version of the old recipe. Here's the current stage it's reached. The cranks (steel, cottered) are off, and will be replaced with alloy ones, it needs a chain, but the thing that's holding it up more is knackered tyres, and a broken spoke. It's just not at the top of the list right now. It'll also get a chainguard, which I have lying around.

www.evanscycles.com ships to USA and knocks the 17% VAT off if you are ordering outside Europe. They stock raleigh so could order one as they don't list the shopper on the website - The shop I bought mine from had to order one in, I don't think any bike shop here would stock one as they are not at all popular in the UK which is a shame as I like mine but wish it was the folding version of the old bike:)
