Foo - Anybody ride a unicycle?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm not in the market, just mildly curious.
I've been intrigued since I was pretty little,
when a family up the street had one, among all their other
boring developmental toys. Only the oldest kid there could
ride the thing. I tried it, and it seemed ridiculously impossible.
Of course, that was some thirty-five years ago :D
So now I'm thinking, something different and cheap to roll up
and down the driveway?

OOPS, I missed this. i ride one. Not well mind you but I can run up and down the sidewalk or over a gravel drive. Took about a week to get the hang of starting, just prop yourself up on something solid, aim and pedal til you fall. Then figure out what you did wrong and don't do it the next time. I am still working on unsupported launch, it is about 50/50 now.
You can pick up a uni for around$100. For an adult I would get a 24" wheel and get a long bmx seatpin and seat post clamp to replace the cheap stuff that comes with the uni, so figure maybe$130. It is a lot of fun.

i have a 20" wheeled unicycle. im pretty good at riding it. in the forwards direction i can ride till i wanna stop. im working on riding backwards and 'trackstands.' i dont get out on it very often though. it takes a good amount of dedication to learn, but once you do you probably wont forget how...
I bought one at a garage sale about 5 years ago ($15). About when my oldest child started practicing his bike w/o training wheels I would go out with him on my uni. I still ride it on and off around the block. I can ride about any distance I want to, but no track stands or riding backwards.

I saw a motorized unicycle article in Popular Science late last year. It was kept in the upright position with gyros. No not the Greek sandwiches :P

Bryan, do a search for "gnein" on the forums. He was once a very active member who was pretty fanatical about unicycling. You might find a review of his posts of interest.

Thanks.
Apparently, lots of folks do it. Looks like there are plenty of resources.
The only potential issue might be size, for my 6'8" body.

My old Schwinn uni is in my attic. When I was about 13 a friend and I would ride these everywhere for miles! We even did mountain unicycling! Mind you this was in the mid 70s (puts me in league with Breeze and Fisher, yes?). We would ride our unicycles in the woods and when we got to a steep ditch we would dare each other to ride through the ditch. Yep, we always took the dare!
For those inquiring minds...I now have two children. ;)
