Bicycle Mechanics - How do I repair light scratches?

My bike had suffered some minor damage, mainly in the handle bars and top tube section, after after performing a bad wipeout in the rain. So, what would be some good ways to hide those scratch marks? I used a universal black touch up paint before but it resulted in a lighter shade than the bike's original color.
I've also heard good things about nail polish, and more prominently the clear coat.
Can anyone tell me the procedure for applying the nail polish + clear coat, or an alternative instead?

I'd say nail polish. That alone should be okay, no need for a clear coat over that.

You mean you want to hide the scratches on a new bike you are going to return? Why would anyone in their right mind help you with your little scam? You bought it, crashed it, you damaged it, it's yours.

Go in, lie that u dropped a tool on it rather than a crash (if the scratches on other parts of the bike don't give u away), and hopefully by paying a small penalty (call it re-stocking fee), they give u a new bike.

Heck, I'll assist with your subterfuge. Given my line of work and history, I'm not even in the same zip code as honest.

Get thee to a motorcycle dealership... Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha. (I don't believe H-D carries it) Ask for:

S100 Total Cycle Finish Restorer (A Smartparts product from BIS-Sole N.A., made in Germany) It looks like a tube of toothpaste, and will cost you a tenner.

It contains a mild abrasive and a pretty good polish. It works wonders as long as the scratches aren't all the way through the paint.

Follow the directions. Expect to do 10 -15 applications over a couple of days.

Oh... and it really does a nice job on alloy parts that have oxidized.
