Road Bike Racing - Things that don't mix . . .

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

1) Trying to get better/faster on the bike.
2) Your daughter joins up with a competitive (semi-traveling) soccer team.
3) Having the US Open in your hometown totally rekindle your golf jones (and that of the friends you usually play with).
Only so many hours in the weekend. Something's got to go. It ain't #2. The blossoming competition between #1 and #3 will be interesting to manage. I fear an increase in birdies and OTBs.
have a friend keep your clubs in his car. ride your bike to the course.

The best thing about golf is that is is way more expensive than cycling. That makes it very easy to justify the bike $'s. You could always threaten to get back into golf!

Cycling and beer. Ironically, they also go great together.

I think golf costs less.... way less

If I could have some friends/acquaintances golf money I'd throw my cycling money out in the street.
Seriously.
Let me hasten to add that I don't ride cheap bikes and my friends aren't on any golf tour either. Golf, unless you're content with the par 3 courses and sweating in the middle of summer, costs unreal money.

I paid 250 a month for a membership at an Arnold Palmer club. This got me free golf on two courses, free range balls, and pretty good pro shop discounts if I needed stuff. I played several times a week and walked *gasp* everytime. Carrying a 5 handicap I could pretty much walk as fast as others riding carts. About once a month during the summer I would enter events (pub link qualify, state championship, city publinks, and the occasional scramble) and this would cost me anywhere from 50 to 200 dollars depending on the event. Peak of the season I would go through a dozen Pro V1 balls about once a month.. Would lose/destroy half and the rest would get damaged to the point they became shag balls. I kept the same clubs every year and got grips twice in a year.....
Round about 300 bucks average per year for my competitive golf habit and I can tell you without a doubt that road bike racing costs me much more. I race several times a month and spend around 100-300 bucks per race weekend for travel, hotel, entry, food, etc. Top that off with replacement parts when things break, medical bills, coaching (killed that one), this sport is expensive.
Now if you are one of those guys that buys every new driver/putter/etc that comes out yeah golf can be expensive but carry that over to cycling and its really expensive....... Clubs dont wear out like bike parts do :)

Good idea. Why didn't I think of that? Last weekend we had several hours between games. Went to the local mall. Should have brought the bike and went riding.

Absent the golf, would you carry the membership? If not, doesn't the $250 figure in? Not meaning to bust your balls, but the people I work with who play regularly consider membership fees & greens fees to be their largest expenses.

Two of my three daughters now play on competitive/travel soccer teams. The third is still young enough that rec league is her only option. Since in March and April it was still snowing/freezing here, a lot of the games were cancelled and played in May. I went from 7-800 miles a month in March and April to 400 in May. There is nothing like a Saturday with 5 or 6 soccer games on the schedule, and 3 more on Sunday.
My only question is did you cross post this to golfforums.net?

Nope but you gotta pay to play unless you are the local top talent and get to play for free :) . If I were just riding my bike that would be one thing but racing 2 to 4 times a month I spend way more than $250 just to travel and race not to mention all the other costs.

Or on the weightweenies.starbike.com alter ego forum golfwrx.com
Well I'm one of the guys I described in my 1st post; alot of par 3s and sweating in the summer to get the cheaper green's fees. (When I play at all anymore).
However, for friends who like to play at Doral or Tesoro (I'm in S. Fla) and get into equipment the way many of us get into bike equipment.....I'd still take their money and throw mine away and smile while doing it.
Of course if I bought a new Cervelo every other season......
As for the OP: I must admit I didn't shed any tears when my older daughter decided not to try to move up from the Under 8s to Travelling. The Under 8s killed the Saturdays as it was. Of course now she's in Middle School Band. So far that has cost more $ than time.......
