Bicycle Mechanics - floor pump question

Does anyone make a quality schrader pump that screws onto the stem? I think they had them 10 years ago when I rode. All I have seen lately have the lever to clamp on the stem. I have wanted to wrap mine around the nearest tree far too often. Any tips to save my pumps life would be appreciated also. Thanks

A good quality head is a very nice thing to have. You did not say what pump you have.

Gee I clicked on your link and there is a single review of that pump head. It states it is better for letting air out of a tire than putting any in. Not exactly a glowing endorsement.:roflmao2:

I have the all brass version of that head. It works fine. It is the typical Silca style friction fit onto presta style stems. The forward portion unscrews for use on Schrader stems. It does screw securely onto a Schrader stem. A little air bleeds out when you remove it, but I don't see how you can avoid that with the screw on style.

I've had no trouble with that style head on both styles of valve stems. The rubber washer for the presta valves will wear out eventually, it requires periodic replacement.

Ya, you're right. I have not used it, although I do have an older silca head that works on both P and S. It works well enough if not a pain to use on schrader. Screwing it on enough to get it to engage the valve is time consuming. I went with the assumption that they would engineer the new one as good or better, caveat emptor. Sheldon's shop (harriscyclery.com (http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/tools/tire.html) says the Silca P/S head is no good too) carries the Top Peak TwinHead replacement. I have the Smarthead and like it although Harris has found problems with them, I guess YMMV. In any case, the TwinHead is not what the OP wants and I don't know of any other screw on type S head.

I wouldn't think that a pump head that screws onto a schrader valve would be a very good idea. Schrader heads have a little finger that depresses the poppet valve. During the time that it takes to unscrew the pump head you're going to lose a lot of the air that you just worked so hard to pump into your tire.

I've used a Silca pump with a screw-on Schrader head, pumped up to 125psi (I know, I should be using Presta but it was the only spare tube I had), and watched as it let out 50psi worth of air as I unscrewed the head.

Ah... NOW I remember why Presta is superior to schrader.

With schrader, the head has to PHYSICALLY push on the valve, hard to fit. Presta, air pressure alone does it. My clamp-on presta works great! My fancy silca screw-on is gathering dust. Sum1 wanna cheap shop-quality floor silca with gauge? :)

There is a leak free schrader screw on head on almost every shock pump out there. I think they have longer threads so the post is disengaged before the head starts to leak.

Now to figure out how to get that onto your floor pump.
