Hi,

I'm thinking about doing the Insane Terrain Challenge since I wasn't able to do the Horribly Hilly Hundreds this year. Anyone have any thoughts about this ride? Anybody riding it? Anybody know the route?

All thought and comments are welcome!

Thanks,
Ana Rose

Looks like fun. Yeah, fun.... that's it!

They have cue sheets posted, but no map, yet. It starts/ends at Blue Mound State Park, but just looking at the cue sheets looks like it takes a different direction in general from the HHH. The final climb to Blue Mound is up Ryan Road to near the top of Mounds Park Rd (which I have yet to ride, but it shows 500+ feet of climbing. Maybe some of the locals can chime in on Ryan Road).

Tempting ride, for sure.

July 19th. Here's the sales pitch from the site:

Brought to you by the Viking Biking Club (director of the Horribly Hilly Hundreds) and GT Bicycles, the INSANE TERRAIN CHALLENGE is soon to be the king of Wisconsin challenge cycling events. Prepare for a unique level of suffering!

With two grueling route options (roughly 200K or 125K) designed by Greg Krystek (The Abomination, HHH), the INSANE TERRAIN CHALLENGE snakes through some of southwestern Wisconsin's most amazing and painful terrain, averaging over 100 feet of ascent per mile on both routes. This is a ride created not only for endurance athletes, but also for those of us who secretly crave to experience the physical and psychological tests only such an extreme event can provide.

On JULY 19, 2008, the INSANE TERRAIN CHALLENGE will begin in the village of Blue Mounds and end (a small lifetime later) at Blue Mound State Park. Enjoy fully stocked rest stops, sag support, finish line refreshments, goodie bags, and a free T-shirt.

Registration is now open through www.bikereg.com.

So are you guys in? The more people there is, the less likely I'm going to come in last. That's my goal: "Not last place". But I think for a ride like this, just finishing is good enough!

Ryan road is a much easier approach to the top of Blue Mounds. I did a bikely map of the route:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Insane-Terrain

The overall elevation totals don't look that bad, but the course profile make it look like a lot of back to back climbs.

Got an E-mail from the organizer Shelby last night. They are looking for volunteers for this ride that starts/ends in Blue Mounds.

Greetings all!
Now that we've all had a bit of time to recover from the Horribly Hilly, I am putting out a request for help for the second ride that's run by the Viking Biking Club...
Called the Insane Terrain Challenge, (www.insane-terrain.com), this event is similar to the HHH, but on a much smaller scale.
I do absolutely understand how precious those weekends in the summer are, and I'm sorry to even ask again for any of your time. This is the first year for the Insane Terrain, so the turnout will be modest. I am asking you to consider giving a few hours of your time in exchange for a great time, a cool t-shirt, a cool bag, and free eats!
If you can help, it would be BEYOND appreciated!!!
Please sign up on the website, www.insane-terrain.com if you're available.
Again, THANK YOU, thank you, thank you !!!
Shelby

I am probably going to give this ride a go. I have never ridden south of Blue Mounds so I am curious to see how challenging it is.

This ride was rather difficult. Actually, it was probably the hardest thing I've ever done on the bike, and that includes the time that I got stuck out in 38 degree rain, 40 miles from home, and all I had on was a wool jersey and shorts with knee warmers. What made it even harder was that me and my riding partner missed the first feed zone and I then overate at the second one, which pretty much made me suck for the last 20 miles. Luckily, I'm so awesome and such a tough pretzel that I still was able to rock it on the way back in, even at a slow crawl on the road back up to the finish line.

I must give massive accolades to the promoters of this ride – they did a bang-up job. Insane Terrain ought to be on the calendar of every Midwesterner.
