too expensive. just save up those empty water bottles and chuck em at those rude motorists. ;) that'll get their attention.

or if you dont have a water bottle, a mini pump will work.

Not empty water bottles, but old water bottles loaded with explosives! Definitely will get the motorists attention!!

Or...carry a digital camera, and file police reports in bulk!
I have a very sympathetic cycling police friend. So far he has mailed 4 tickets based off of my pictures.
Three were for parking in bike lanes, and the other was for throwing a bottle and yelling obscene things at me. Stupid high school kids!

At least he'll do that for you. Up here they frequently don't even issue any tickets after accidents.

The second definition is the one that would be applicable...

Caltrop Cal"trop, Caltrap Cal"trap, n. OE. calketrappe,
calletrappe, caltor (in both senses), fr. AS. collraeppe,
calcetreppe, sort of thistle; cf. F. chaussetrape star
thistle, trap, It. calcatreppo, calcatreppolo, star thistle.
Perh. from L. calx heel + the same word as E. trap. See 1st
Trap.
1. (Bot.) A genus of herbaceous plants (Tribulus) of the
order Zygophylleae, having a hard several-celled
fruit, armed with stout spines, and resembling the
military instrument of the same name. The species grow in
warm countries, and are often very annoying to cattle.

2. (Mil.) An instrument with four iron points, so disposed
that, any three of them being on the ground, the other
projects upward. They are scattered on the ground where an
enemy's cavalry are to pass, to impede their progress by
endangering the horses' feet.

The problem with caltraps is that they basically work on pneumatic tires, which bicycles rely on, as well as motor vehicles. I'm liking the portable EM pulse device better, myself.

EMP generator, I like it! Sounds like it might be kinda heavy though... ;)

How about a land mine type device with a spring loaded spike that shoots up a couple of inches to one side of the trigger device. That would miss a bike tire and be lower than the pedal, while still causing a flat car tire. Resetting the mine would be done with a small "T-wrench" that uses a rotating motion to reload and set the spike. Wrenches given out free to anyone riding up to the local city "yard" on a bicycle.

At one place where I used to work, the security guards put large warning stickers on the windshields, directly in the drivers field of view, of badly parked cars. The glue used was a real pain to remove so nobody ever needed a second warning. This should work for cars parked in bike lanes.

I was thinking of doing something like this the other day. I would scan a city parking ticket and print out dozens of these to place on double parked cars in the bike lane. The carbon copy would have to look real good and then there's the problem with the paper. I think it would work as most motorists would pay the ticket and I highly doubt the parking authority would ever return the money.

The way to keep cars out of bike lanes should be legal and non-violent. I remember the story as one Internet user got so upset by the spam that he sent to the spammer the death threats by e mail and was convicted for this.

So land mines, spikes, forget tickets, and the like are no good IMHO.

I heard that some ladies first made verbal notice to the driver to not park the car in the yard of the apartment block house. Then left the handwritten note on the windshield: "Do not leave your car here." I do not know if it worked, but it impressed the driver, as far as I know, because his spouse told us this story at work.

Since anyone wishes to be the recognized member of the community, it may work when the community expresses its displeasure. Certainly, for this there should be the community in existence. Obviously, in that large house there were people, who understood the dangers of turning the living space into the parking lot and garage. Besides these ladies seemed to be well organized, so that they could act together. The organized group is already the power.

I think the individuals who recognize the perils of mass usage of cars should try to express their opinion, find people, who think alike, educate others, organize somehow, and act together then.
