Northeast - Trenton NJ to Ambler PA
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm taking the train from NYC to Trenton, NJ. Hoping to ride my bike from there to my final destination in Ambler PA. Has anyone ridden this route? Google maps puts me on route 1, but I don't think bikes are allowed on route 1 in that area, is that correct?
Alternate routes are very complicated - something like 37 different turns over 30 miles, though not significantly further than the route 1 option.

You can use the Philadelphia metro bike map (http://www.bicyclecoalition.org/map/map.html) to pick out a route. The route that you are going to Ambler roughly follows BikePA route S (http://www.dot.state.pa.us/BIKE/WEB/tour_routes.htm). The roads are marked with signs so it is pretty easy to follow.
You can't ride on Route 1, and I would recommend avoiding any roads in the vicinity of Route 1 since it is heavily populated. From the Trenton train station I would cut through downtown (State Street is a good option) and cross the Delaware River on the Calhoun Street Bridge into PA. From there you can ride north on River Road to pick up Route S, or take some of the suburban streets west towards Newtown.
For a little bit of a longer ride, you could get off the train at Princeton Junction and head west to avoid Trenton altogether.
great, thanks for the info!

Ambler is probably also covered by NJ Bike Maps (www.njbikemap.com). It's more detailed about what are scenic / cycle-friendly routes.
