Bicycle Mechanics - What is an inline indicator?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

That is all.

Not enough information. If you mean an inline gear indicator, it's a worthless gadget that splices into your rear derailleur cable housing that has a clear window through which you can see the cable. The cable is marked and the clear window has markings so you can see roughly what cog you're on.

Talk about esoteric.
Yeah, it's just like those gear indicators that those dumb MTB riders use, except it's in the cable rather than on the shifter pod.

High end MTB shifters do not have indicators. (SRAM X.9, X.0, New XT, XTR) Shimano now sells a XTR 9 speed indicator.

I had indicators on a mountain bike, I found I didn't really use them. I'm sure there are lots of folks that do, though.

Thank you! Sorry for the vague question. I heard that it is a cheap alternative to getting the Shimano Flight Deck that has a selling point of having a gear indicator on it. Glad Scooper and Ruppster interpreted my question correctly!
I think I'm going to get one. I have a triple chainring (not ashamed to admit it!) and sometimes I absentmindedly stretch the chain across the rings.
