Bicycle Mechanics - PowerLink broke on ride

I broke my PC 991 PowerLink on my morning ride. The chain had 2,500 miles on it and was removed only once for cleaning at approximately 1,500 miles. The existing PowerLink was reused. I always lube my chain with ProLink after every other ride and clean the chain with the Park chain cleaner.

I have not seen this situation discussed on the forums—I don’t know if it is normal or some kind of aberration.

I had to get a ride back home because I did not have a spare PowerLink or chain tool.

In the future I am riding with 2 spare PowerLinks.

I hate those master link things. I prefer to just use a chain tool.

I had one break, but it was after 100-200mi or so of new chain install.
Otherwise my use aggregates to about 40,000mi more or less past
8 yrs with powerlink or analogs without any trouble. I have had a
chain come apart after use of chain tool to assemble also, but this
has happened only twice, once in '70s on a five speed chain and
once in Shimano chain era before I discovered the power link.

You lubed it too much!

Thank god shimano is moving into the 21st century with masterlinks. Replacement pins to rejoin a chain, prone to error and costs. Great system.

I've been using SRAM chains w/ Powerlinks and Prolink lube for 8 years and never had a problem with the Powerlink. I ride mountain and replace the chain (and Powerlink) when stretch reaches 0.75% stretch per my Park chain gauge. I've never had a problem with the Powerlink or SRAM chains in general. I'd assume your situation is a fluke.

I ride with both an 8- and 9-speed Powerlinks in my Camelback. Over the past few years, I helped others repair broken chains on trail by removing the messed up link and attaching the chain with one of my spare Powerlinks. Thus far, every chain I had to repair have been either Shimano or KMC. These spare links are from old chains.
